mono-occular-serpent: Story time! I used to work security for Yale. There are several other secret societies, S&B is just the most well known. There was a fire alarm inside one of them and they're the only buildings we don't have keys for. The FD on the other hand has the big spinning master key and cut the hinges off the huge steel door to get inside. They cleared it that there was no fire (false alarm) and a few of us (PD, FD and security) were ALL curious so we snuck inside. It was very interesting, and VERY beautiful with elaborate woodworking on what looked like the dining room. A few minutes later a well dressed man appeared and kindly asked us to GTFO.

It's obviously a great way to create connections and make deals.

There are no movie style secret societies but there are tons of exclusive clubs of one sort of another and countless exclusive groups of varying sizes and among those a lot of major deals and national or even international politics are made.

Power and money corrupt everyone to some extent and those people are always trying to get richer and prevent rivals from getting ahead.

But instead of established and formalized societies that control large parts of the world it's a few billionaires here, some politicians there and lots of mixed groups and they make a lot of connections and especially back room deals all over the place.

Not in some James Bond villain lair but rather in a 3 Michelin star restaurant over food costing 3 grand or in someone's beach resort or vacation villa or just over dinner in their main mansion when they have some other ultra wealthy and ultra influential people over.

It's not coordinated nor comprehensive, it's countless people doing countless shady things to enrich themselves or their friends and families at random times and mostly without knowing what kinds of deals others made.

Countries with low corruption have relatively few of these deals and the corruption is generally not that high, e.g. they make a deal to obstruct a rival so they can't get a government contract or whatever but in countries with a lot of corruption that could be to make up some bogus crimes and have the police plant fake evidence so the rival gets locked up for 20 years or even executed.
