Tsedek_ben_Shimon: When the first temple was attacked the Ark of the Covenant, and a number of other things, were moved down into "Jeremiah's grotto". There is some very interesting information pertaining to this in a Playlist called "The Ark Of The Covenant" by Michael Rood.

The Ark has never been moved out of Jeremiah's grotto, and the Jewish authorities in Israel are well aware of its existence and location.

A man by the mane of Ron Wyatt excavated the area beneath the crucifixion site of Yehoshua and found the chamber and recorded his findings. The information he provides is very compelling, and a number of reliable and devout Christians, including Henry Gruver, have vouched for Ron Wyatt (that his findings are genuine).

Tsedek_ben_Shimon: Many depictions of the Ark have two bird like creatures on top of it. This incorrect. It is a Mercy SEAT, how could God sit on it? The dimensions given in the scriptures indicate that it is like a small bench seat, much like you would see for a piano. The Cherubim are standing on each end looking down toward the seat, each with a wing extended toward the other Cherubim creating a "back" for the seat.
