The Abandoned Practical Effect of Raiders of the Lost Ark

ianlabat8724: That belongs in a museum

MrCatball1: I genuinely love how that single shot of the eyes slightly moving adds an element of self doubt. It's just noticeable enough for some to notice it (I know I never did until watching this) but subtle enough to make many of those people second guess themselves, thinking it might all be in their heads. It parallels the whole question over the existence of the supernatural within the film, it's not enough to concretely prove that the supernatural exists, but it sows just a little bit of doubt and mystery. I would not be surprised if the moving eyes were deliberately included (or at least not removed once noticed) in a very subtle way to heighten the air of mystery in the film.

joshslater2426: The fact the eyes move is such an interesting idea that really adds to the eerie atmosphere of the scene. Maybe it was wise for the film to not directly show the eyes moving, as it then feels like the sort of obscure detail that wouldn’t be noticed until the internet came along. I’d like to see the deleted footage restored if possible.

googleuser3163: I'm lucky enough to have a real gold-plated brass cast of the hero prop, with the correct shape mouth and the glass eyes! It wasn't cheap but it's the pride of my collection

weirdproq: New Yesterworld? Let's gooooo!

bigbangbot-SuperSqank: Always a good day when Yesterworld uploads.

QuintonReviews: This reminds me of the "hanging Munchkin" urban legend in the Wizard of Oz. Where people made a tradition of studying the grainy and fuzzy video, sometimes frame-by-frame, and insisting that some secret was hidden away. Except in this case, the legend was real! And not just a weird bird

TheNerdWithASuit: What's als funny is that Yesterworld could also do a video all about Indiana Jones's hat itself and the legends about how it was originally meant for Tom Selleck, why it appears a bit off center, the famous "Raiders Turn", the false reports of the missing hat block, and how the design of it changed for the next two movies.

ianpatrickmchugh787: Of all the channels covering the varied forms of entertainment, from rides, theme parks, movies, television, and even fast food restaurants, yours is by far my favorite!

lanceturley7745: I'm glad they ditched the moving eyes effect in the final film. Like you were saying, it diminishes Indy's character arc as a sceptic and lessens the mystery of the Ark if we already know that supernatural elements exist in that world.

ahhamartin: At the theater in '81, several people kinda quietly gasped at that moment. My dad, seeing me confused, whispered "it's watching him". I remember it because I never knew he meant the eyes actually moved, until now.

imaginationstationyt6948: We are so back! Love Raiders of The Lost Ark. It is an amazing film! Thanks for covering this topic. I remember hearing/seeing something about the Idol's eyes moving in the film. Can't wait to have watched the full video! Thanks again, Yesterworld!

countphil1: Fantastic video, i never knew about the idol eyes moving, i would be interested to learn more about the fate of famous props.

jackstarr02: released just as i started building a LEGO set, what perfect timing

AG-co5iu: Always happy to see you. Thank you.

2010sfan: Yesterworld upload, you know it'll be good!

ctermaat: Man I get excited when a new Yesterworld drops. Looks like I know what I’m doing for the next half hour.

ethanmacdowell7531: New Yesterworld Time! Always a pleasure!

W1ldestride: This is such a bizarre rabbit hole that I’m so surprised I haven’t heard of yet

TheDigitalApple: A famous movie prop that’s surrounded by controversy on which statue is legitimate and used in the movie? Sounds familiar.

crixxxxxxxxx: DVDs came out in the mid-late '90s.

hjeart: and here I thought this well had run dry - Seriously, there was so much here I'd never heard or seen before about Raiders, Thank you for making this one!

alexarroliga284: Good to see you back Yesterworld. It's been a while.

DaveysWonderfulWorld: Oooo It’s great To hear more of Raiders of The Lost Ark!

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas couldn’t ask for a better Combo!
