Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981 First Time Watching Phoenix Nat Reacts

gage8545: We’re doing movies here now?! I’m here for it!

stonecoldku4161: 18:27

Everyone: Boss fight!

Indiana Jones: Yeah, but I've already done all the side quests.

rossfinlayson9429: The coat hanger skit makes me laugh every time

joeb918: When Spielberg and Lucas made these films they were basically trying to recreate the type of action adventure aerials they grew up with as kids, the type of movies that would later inspire them. I think they largely delivered in that front, as these movies feel rather close to those even more “classic” films. It’s funny you kept dubbing this a classic, when I think of movies from the 1920s-60s classics, not movies from the 80s.. heh but that’s just 80s kid me not want8mg to face how old these films actually are!

Fruhara: Oh this IS a great surprise, can't believe you haven't seen these. Absolutely adore this trilogy and hope you do also

stonecoldku4161: 15:10 "Oh! I didn't even recognize it was John Rhys-Davies."

Well, he is taller in this.

alecfoster5542: Those were not ghosts that came out of the Ark, but the angels assigned to protect it.

DavidStebbins: Raiders of the Lost Ark was the spiritual successor to the movie serials of the 1930s and 40s. Like Star Wars a few years earlier it fueled the imagination of kids and teens like nothing else. I had started playing Dungeons and Dragons about a year earlier and this movie lived on in many of the adventures my friends and I had. My favorite line is after the truck sequence. Indy has been shot, beaten, and dragged, then when they are about to get on the boat Katanga says, "Doctor Jones, I've heard a lot about you, sir. Your appearance is exactly the way I imagined!"

stonecoldku4161: 46:22 No, the actor did not eat the fly. He says that it flew off, and we would've seen it, but a couple of frames were edited out of the movie, and so it looks like the fly just went into his mouth when it actually flew off.

MartinBeerbom: 38:30 The driver of the truck who Indy punches and pushes off here is stuntman Terry Leonard, who came up with and performed the bulk of the sliding-under-the-truck stunt. It was inspired by a stunt in the 1939 western "Stagecoach", and Terry had tried to do it for a western just a year earlier, where it wouldn't work, so he suggested to do the modified version here. And Harrison got dragged personally behind the truck for the close-up shots.

stonecoldku4161: 21:15 "Oh the poison. The poisonous Dates."

Yeah, I've been on a few of those myself.

That's a terrible pun. I will see myself out.

DFWTexan42: Huge hit, Harrison Ford was already famous from Star Wars. This just cemented his position as a major actor. Another top role for him was as the President in Air Force One.

Flush2020: 6:39 I'm impressed that she was able to write so legibly on her own eyelids.

kellymoses8566: The most iconic opening scene of any movie.

brucalizer: This is so exciting! So looking forward to seeing you experience this classic for the first time!

joeb918: Some fun trivia. The German lines in this film were originally dubbed in by native speakers because the American actors accents kept creeping in as well as being wrong. Some lines were also quite wrong, for the DVD release they had corrected and fixed all the German lines.

Indy’s iconic hat was bought from a famous hat shop from Saville Row, London… the prop master and Ford roughed it up in multiple ways including sitting on it to give it a well worn/loved look.

sulosky: Oh Nat! This was my favorite movie from childhood. Later, I found other favorites too, and nowadays I think Last Crusade is the best Indy movie. Thank you for this reaction! You're awesome :)

stonecoldku4161: With it being George Lucas and Steve Spielberg there are a number of references to their other movies. An example is a couple of hieroglyphs on the wall in the snake pit where they found the Ark were of R2-D2 and C3PO.

jaypeve: You should watch Jurassic Park, Night at the Museum, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Jungle Cruise, Jumanji

joeb918: $2000 would be about $47917, €41073, £35585

stonecoldku4161: One last fun fact: George Lucas did not want to cast Harrison Ford in this movie. Early in his career he had this thing of not wanting to use the same actors for different roles in different movies. He was hoping to use someone else and was eventually talked into giving Harrison a chance of getting the part. The original actor they wanted was Tom Selleck who also wanted to star as Indiana Jones and had agreed to the movie, but Tom was also staring the TV series Magnum PI and due to a scheduling conflict or contract issue he had to pull out of playing Indy. Harrison got the part after Selleck pulled out. There is footage online of Tom Selleck doing a screen test for Indiana Jones.

campagnollo: Indy shooting the swordsman was a bit off script. Harrison Ford was IRL suffering from Gastro/intestinal issues and really couldn't perform the scene. So instead of a fight, it was written in that he shot him.

domingocurbelomorales8635: This was the first film of Alfred Molina (Dr Octopus in Spiderman). The guy who betrays Indy at the beggining.

domingocurbelomorales8635: Indy´s friend, Sallah, is played by John Rhys Davies; who also played the dwarf Gimli in Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Kygira: Love that the recent Indiana Jones:and the great circle take place after this movie. Anyways great reaction.

stonecoldku4161: 28:54 Depending on the quality of the video there have been times where I've been able to make out a reflection of the cobra on a glass patrician separating the snake from Harrison Ford in this scene.

MartinBeerbom: The submarine and the submarine bunker are the same as for Wolfgang Petersen's "Das Boot". Its production company loaned the submarine (mock-up) to Spielberg, but forgot to tell the crew about it, who showed up one morning to find the dock empty. It was very late in the schedule, they only needed it for one additional shot, so no great harm done, but...

I'm also certain that you can hear one of "Das Boot"'s actors speaking over the PA system here in "Raiders", but I haven't been able to verify it.
