Emacspirate: Just choose Ele otherwise learning it later is way harder. haha Actually you level do fast these days that this may not be the case any longer? So just choose what's most fun like you said!
bion-geek-le1109: Heavy: guardian, actually has a place in the meta (unlike warrior) and isn't as complicated as revenant
Medium: thief, dual pistols go brrrrrrrr
Light: necromancer, not as complex as Mesmer or ele and does some crazy numbers with any elite spec
Beriorn: Something to keep in mind with Elementalist is that your choice of weapon is much more indicative of your role on the battlefield as the rest of the classes, since you cannot switch in a fight. From the start of the game you have five choices:
- Dagger/Dagger is a highly aggressive combat style with many on-self AoEs, but if the boss is good at keeping away or has a damage aura you're in trouble.
- Scepter/Focus is a mid-range fighter with defensive utility, but by itself the scepter needs some help to truly shine.
- Dagger/Focus alleviates some of the defensive issues Elementalist has, but this comes at the cost of a lower damage output.
- Scepter/Dagger has good damage and allows you to function at range, but if you don't fight enemies that close the distance or have damage auras it's kind of a waste.
- Staff is a useful long range support weapon, but it lacks the damage output that the other weapons have. Great for group content, less so when soloing.
At early levels I prefer dual dagger with staff as a backup, but try it all out and see what works for you. Once you start unlocking new weapons you can experiment more (as of writing you have twelve combinations of one-handed weapons and three two-handed weapons), but dagger/dagger staff is a solid foundation to learn Elementalist on.
groudonsbest: I'd personally put Necro above Guardian myself, back when I was new I was often getting tripped up by Guardian's low HP pool and various of its defenses needing activated at the right times, that natural Aegis from virtue takes a long time to come back after it gets used. I got downed and KO'd a lot more as a new player on Guardian than I did with the high HP second life bar of Necromancer combined with Blood Fiend being automatic healing.
DoamBot: Prior to watching
Necro, Ranger, and Guardian depending on weight. They are the three golden child specs
peterscore1823: If you need a low apm class, unload dual pistol thief works well. I started a new ftp account to check it out with no masteries. At lvl 15 when I acquired a 2nd pistol it turned into a breeze to level. Only time I weapon swap is when I need more range. Only open world and it does not teach much about cycling skills. Set unload to the auto skill and circle straff until dead.
SocratesJuJitsu: I would recommend Guardian or Engineer as a first character. Also Hunte...... I mean Ranger.
electroelysium2281: Started today and I went for a Necromancer as I thought it looked cool ! Can't wait to get it to Reaper, but I won't rush the leveling experience. I like taking my time and learning everything the game has to offer as much as possible before reaching max level.
Francotiger: I started with Elementalist and it was punishing to the point where I became obsessed with learning all the skills of all the elements on all the weapons. Before I even left the starting zone.
ZianaSue: I personally think that ranger, necromancer, and engineer are the easiest ones for a new player. Ranger and necro for the pet and minion meat shields and tanks. Engineer for the turrets, place your turrets and let them be your damage-dealing tank while you defeat enemies.
Aliessil: It's worth mentioning for newcomers - your weapon choices can make a BIG difference to how your character feels, and each profession has their own selection of skills for each weapon (i.e. a Guardian with a greatsword has completely different skills and playstyle than a Mesmer with a greatsword). This gives an obsurd amount of choice in how you play! Another example - an elementalist with a staff is a long-range, slow-casting AoE power house, whereas going dagger/dagger makes you a very mobile, high-speed melee assassin. Regardless of which profession you pick, you really should try every weapon you can equip!
Personally I started with an elementalist, 8 or 9 years ago - if you've played other MMOs it's not that hard, and I really loved the variety! I also remember having an absolute blast levelling an engineer with a focus on kits, giggling like a maniac as I ran through Ascalon scattering bombs and grenades behind me for mobs to run into! I've since played every profession extensively and the only one I don't really get on with is the warrior.
mpythonfan828: my first character was a Ranger and my second I am working on is Necromancer both are a lot of fun. I picked Ranger because I love playing a hunter in WOW and I play Dancer in FFXIV so I have a type I guess. I would eventually like to try all the classes.
Timbued: We have managed to persuade some friends to finally play with us recently and most of our friends just take necromancer after giving each class a little whirl. I seem to be a player surrounded by death :D
zzzohirrr: oh daddy i just downloaded the game, i know you are stalking me
Kraftigebub: Can confirm, just pick whatever you want and have some fun. Just got to lvl 76 as a Mesmer and didn't feel like it was hard at all. (Also thanks cafdad for recommending this. It's a great palate cleanser now FF XIV is kind of in the pre patch dead zone)
rapdota07: Thanks! I'm like 10 hours in playing ranger. Do you have any guides on systems in game? I'm a bit confused about elite specialization and is it correct that I can learn all elite specialization?
Stouts_: On August 25th 2012 I chose the guardian as my first class and he remains my main and most played character to date. Can’t wait to see what the bday presents is next month!
darsin7860: Enjoyed!
eurasiacentertutorials9518: The best class to play is...the one you want to play! But seriously agree with this video. Personally for me though I really hate guardian and cannot get into it. But the Ranger is great and feels like a "weapon master" class in a lot of ways the others do not. What I mean is, the Warrior at a base level can
robshaw2639: Hey Dad - you’re seeing all the teasers for the new elite specs, right? Any chance of a vid, maybe after the reveal on Jul 15, which ones you will go for first?
jorgeroman9916: My first main was ele and GRENTH, THAT WAS PAINFUL. Even worse, I choose Weaver as the Elite Spec and had a mix of useless stats on my exotic armor, so I was struggling just to stay alive in Orr. When I created my first Necro and researched a little about the builds and stats I felt in love with Necro (to the point I have 2 necros on my account). And yeah, Reaper is a blast for solo and story, but Scourge is a solid and wonderful support for group content.
So my advice would be: you can play Ele as your first class, but please research a little about builds and stats before wearing the first piece of gear you loot.
kizzatta: Necro is #1 yo. Ranger is easy too, but Necro can turn into a Reaper later on, which is one of the easiest elite specs to play. Not to mention Reapers have incredible single-target and AoE damage with minimal effort, are tanky with tons of health, and are a blast to play if you enjoy an aggressive melee playstyle. While Reapers are primarily melee, they have some ranged moves in their kit. After playing all professions, Reaper is the only one I play today. They are pure fun and they wreck everything. Trust in Zatta.
zzzohirrr: thx for the video, new sub
EdsDelishFoods: The classes I like to use are : Ele, Ranger and Guardian but most of the time I play my Ele class.
TrickyIsSpecial: So im like level 33 and before watching your videos I chose elementalist
