My Honest Take On The Newer GW2 Expansions

DarkeshiDraws: The fact that we waited not 3, but 6 months for the story update, and we get so little in return, is really sad, not even somewhat decent cinematics on story like the ones in soto

i mean, seriously, i got most of what the update can offer, 100% map completion, most events done and the story complete in just one day, in a couple of hours, and not even trying hard, just casually playing, speaks volumes on what can we really expect of anet, most of the things left to do is the grindfest to get materials for the legendaries and exp to lvl the masteries that are not very impactful outside of castora

The yearly expansions sounded like a good idea, but there's a huge gap of quality between HoT, PoF and EoD and Soto, Janthir and VoE

honestly o would glady go back to have Full expansions and living world seasons in between like old days, because newewst expansions are just like LWS but worse

moof1315: From my casual perspective, it's working fairly well. It may be true that the dragon saga expacs added more systems, but I'm ok with anet not adding systems just to add systems. I guess by systems I mean features. We have mounts, gliding, the jade bot, fishing, housing. Are there really any features left? If we only get more story and maybe weapons and or elite specs from here on out, I'm ok with that. I don't think additional mounts would really add anything.

It's kind of a rough spot for anet to be in. The game offers so much that it's difficult to envision what else they could add. It may make the thought of working on a gw3 more attractive, but I would be sad to see the playerbase split.

I hope they can continue the story at a higher level compared to jw, that's my main concern. I'm feeling generally optimistic about gw2. One thing I would like to see would be some new gw novels.

Opus_Fluke: Just remember what was going on during development of IBS/LWS5 (we all, devs included, had to stay at home). And SOTO was the very first try at the yearly release model. No, not copium. Just reality. Hopefully the story doesn't fold like a deck of cards on this third try because it's been good so far. Really good. And as I already have Vision and Aurora I can sell my mats to players wanting the new Shiny Thing so I can finally finish making Endless Summer.

It's a casual game. Fine. I'm an old fart who can't sit for hours on end anymore let alone sit for hours on end gaming. I play GW2. I nip into GW Reforged (Legendary Defender of Ascalon is a grind). I'm fooling around in Windrose and remember to check on Enshrouded on occasion. GW2 isn't my life any more than the books I'm reading are. I have a life outside of gaming, obligations, things to do.

But I'm happy not having to wait literal years for new content.

samuraichicken2315: Is it realistic to expect a game to keep you entertained 365 days a year for 14 years straight?

Beriorn: This was by far the best map added through a patch ever since we got the new update model. It wasn't a suppressive and divvied up as Nayos, it wasn't just the three dolled up lanes of the Barrens and it was more than the dolled up meta arena of Bava Nivos. This feels much more like a complete map with everything there is to do on a proper map.

mekal177: I really need to give this game another shot ive even purchased a couple of the expansions i think the lack of the trinity stops me from getting into it though

ruinition737: Well they made me quit after 10 years.

widomakerz2570: We always were getting new content quarterly in the form of the living world story with new maps with each chapter, what they did was stopped doing full expansions and monetized the living world. Sure the first part of the mini expansion might be bigger, but the other releases are no bigger than the living world chapters.

MrDwightSchrute: The content is just too small

DarkKnightofAnime: I think they’ve been getting better overall for sure, for me SoTO was kind of the only truly bad expansion as for a game that prides itself on its non-linear exploration, that felt like the most linear expansion ever

zer0homer: I am a casual player with main hobby other than videogames (TTRPGs & play-by-post RP GMing mostly) and busy work and personal life schedules. I come to my MMOs (GW2 and LOTRO these days, used to be ESO, but the quality of expansions lore and vibe-wise dropped off the cliff so much so that I could not tolerate the endless gear grind cycle as the main course of entertainment anymore, so I quit) to decompress and gather mental clarity for another productive endeavor, so I rarely raid or do endgame content these days, and when I feel up to something intensive, I lead a meta or WvWvW ppt squad. In my opinion, new systems and collections are fine, casual player's needs first focus of the game is the right marketing strategy for GW2, an MMO as chill and horizontal as one gets to be ever since it has launhed back in august 2012, when I was a high schooler with no nerve damage and permanent burnout and could intensively play harder content daily (Dungeon week in Arah reminded me of the times I tried the hardest, yeah), but disliked WoW and Aion PUGs and gear grind. Updates for daily rewards feel better than in SotO and JW. The story has been mid ever since EoD, and I was underwhelmed by JW and mursaat and titan lore, but Vloxx and Inquest are refreshing. This expansion feels much better, almost on the level of EoD, but I just want us to venture into Dzalana or into the Mists already.

206Zelda: Yes and no; it all depends on whether or not the players are happy with the content and wish to move forward with it. If it satiates, then it's enough. If it doesn't, then it isn't.

Even hardcore fans are giving pause to the reagent-map of the newest PvE craftables that dropped recently, which implies ANET either needs the gold-sink from gem purchases and are scrapping for more whales OR they're hedging the grindfest to keep players busy for longer periods of time. I won't even go into the story since I have been non-plussed since the end of Icebrood and my mood cemented by the time I finished with EoD and its epilogue; not my cuppa, I enjoy writings and musings of J.R.R Tolkien, not ANET vibe-code and pride flags. That being said, there are many that have enjoyed what I dislike and that's fine; it's their entire world and I'm not going to stomp on their experiences. As I've stated before, if you're enjoying yourself but there isn't much to do, then take a brief respite and come back to it feeling excited and refreshed. If you're not enjoying things, take a break anyway. The business model doesn't matter so long as it's either fulfilling (or not fulfilling) YOUR needs as an individual. Best of wishes to you all.

alisardius1577: The moment ArenaNet failed me with the rushed end of dragons saga, I kind of stopped caring for the game. I did buy all the expansions but the previous one with bears was so pointless and boring I am having difficulties even looking into this new Asuran one. I don't really care for the game and if I could, I would return to Lineage 2 C4-Interlude era. That was the best MMO I have ever played. Unfortunately it was different times

dallassukerkin6878: For me, the answer is a clear "Not really working well". To use a food analogy, we are getting fast-food burgers rather than properly cooked steak dinners now ... and being charged pretty much the same price.

I think it is illustrative of the problem that I bought the VoE expansion on release ... and I have not even been there yet, my level of enthusiasm is so low.

Adding new Legendaries is content; having higher, more aggressive, mob density, that just serve to stop you enjoying the landscape, is not content; more Raids and Fractals or other instanced 'fights' is only 'sort of' content, shoebox sized maps or ones made frustrating to navigate by layering, is not content.

I am sure there are players who don't recognise those points as applying to them. But I am equally sure there are players who think such thoughts.

Just_Joe: I literally spend my time in the game coming back for an hour to play the story, 10 minutes of crafting a legendary, getting MCs and liquid gold from the vault. That is it. Next patch....

benlee9409: I am a casual pve player and I do wish Anet can ditch out all the 10 men and hard mode stuffs altogether because the only way Anet knows about making hard content is layers on top of layers of confuse be it all sorts of colorful indicators or effect zones..... on top of the boss being super sponge that require players to do keyboard-dance for 10mins. Raiding in GW2 isn't hard...... it's utterly tiresome and boring.

nitramx1470: I wouldn't mind the cycle being 1.5 years and having longer hiatuses, but with more content every release. Having 2 raids, not even a wing is just tragic, w8 for all its shortcomings is solid, I wish we had a w9, in one map that you can fullclear, just like the hot or pof raids.

TheDeadgedd: Vloxx is a great Bond villain but they need to go back to full expansions and living world episodes they should charge a few quid for the episodes though to help keep revenue up

RextheExemplar-w3f: I agree with you on Living World Season 4. In my opinion as far as story content for both games I put the original Prophecies as #1 and Living World Season 4 as #2. I believe one of the main reasons the story was so compelling was it brought back 2 unresolved storylines from GW1, Glint and Joko. Ice Brood Saga had the potential with Jormag as a different kind of dragon, with a sly/manipulative kind of agenda. Sadly most of the content was boring filler with a weak ending.

Westivalz: Legendries are what makes me log into play mostly. The lack of legendary weapons has me nothing to grind for. I’m just waiting for something I want in the game to come back and play.

Cold-Blooded-Jay: The yearly stuff is wonderful but I wouldn't mind waiting for a true expansion every now and then. They could alternate to spice things up.

TheGoatBeats: I think they changed their whole model. Im 2 expansions back and if i buy the latest then the previous one is not included, i would have to buy it full price even if it is an older expansion, there are no bundles for me either. So i practically need to buy them both separately.

The biggest hickup is the engine of the game , great for solo but horrible even with a moderate amount of people. Dont wanna pay 25€ expansions for a 2001 modded engine that is practically DX9.

whiteinge: I'm going through the game for the first time. I've been head-over-heels loving each expansion more than the last. The personal story was decent, then the writing just exploded in awesome and stayed there expansion after expansion. They've had me completely and utterly hooked for 650 hours. But I just got to the part of Icebrood Saga where the writing suddenly and inexplicably drops off a cliff. They retcon'ed Jormag from a terrifying psychological force of nature to a whiny liar, they lost John DiMaggio, and it seems all the characters suddenly lost 30 IQ points. Dragons went from being the vastness of nature and maybe even reality itself to...just big NPCs that aren't nice? Woof. I'm on day two of reeling from the change and I'm not sure how I want to proceed. You said SoO and Janthir are "meh" but VoE is good so I am glad to hear they have a return-to-form, but that's a very long way from where I am now. I'm sad and disappointed.

Ficohaker: In my opinion it would work hell of a lot better if they did patch 0 all maps and story, patch 1-3 quality of life and living world updates, as in bunch of events, small in world events and bunch of community oriented activities.

The story being so clustered is the issue, because that kills the casuals. Everything else is whatever honestly

renandutra7564: I would preffer to pay monthly a fee and keep the old system than rushed unninteresting expansions. I feel since the Dragon Saga ended, there's no more significant interesting enemey.

sno0p3r: HoT was the best expansion! EDIT: the new shit are not expansions but DLCs and their only goal is to milk your money as much as possible.

shikouji: VoE is great
