Starthix: I think Story, Masteries and Mounts (not necessarily in order or sequentially) are the most important beats to hit once you are 80. You can do them all with less than Ascended gear and they will even give you some along the way. In addition, doing the story in order isn't even necessary, but I think it's recommended and while you do it, you can unlock a large amount of mastery points. The key is not to rush and just enjoy it.

I also think ultimately, you do need all the expansions and living world eventually to have the complete experience. It's by no means necessary to get it all at once, but it should be your goal if you enjoy the game, so much of the best this game has to offer is there and they are worth every penny even at full price. (but you should wait for a sale)

MarvinRock787: After the 2 expansions, get the Living World stories from the gem store. If you are good at getting gold, you can exchange gold for gems. After that, get the next expansions on sale. No need to get everything at once. Although each expansion purchased you get an additional character slot and shared inventory space. So that might be a reason to get more expansions before you need them.

capolot: arenanet really needs to make the first 2 or 3 expansions free. If a player wanted full access to everything right out of the gate they'd have to spend well over 100 bucks to do that. honestly, if i had to "skip" expansions I skip janthir wilds and visions of eternity.

nhatquang6859: i spent 4 years playing in HoT and PoF maps with 1 build(ascended build). I now finally moved on to EoD at 3000h in this game and with 30 legendary items. So yes u dont have to buy everything from the start just enjoy the game no rush no min-maxing glhf
