Shopping CartBigbossShoshka: The funniest outcome of all this would be turtle getting shut down and then a year later blizzard releases classic with all their ideas.
crono796: Turtle did this to itself. Monetization of a server that knowingly operates in a legal gray area is a self-inflicted wound.
rochellebelle1: They think Blizzard will be like... sure, have some free money.
connissia: Turtle WoW is cooked. Blizzard isn't going to share profits with anyone and will continue to protect their IP.
nichohells: They were so cocky at the start lmao
nobah8131: Thumbnail: "THEY'VE HIT BACK – HARD!"
Video: "Yeah, it's just a PR-Stunt."
patriciaoster7020: How kind of them to say Blizzard can continue to control the IP Blizzard owns.
tylerkrutz6884: After blizzard missed out on owning the MOBA scene with the Defender of the Ancients mod for Warcraft 3 , they are going to be quite hesitant to release any of their IPs framework.
xXLucromXx: I am not sure if they understand what copyright means
alodar: Blizzard doesn't care about the public relations battle
KnightWhoSpamsNi: This situation is like a burglar sending a letter to the jeweler he robbed, asking for permission to open a franchise where he would sell the stolen diamonds—but in his own setting. :-)
bootnscoot5265: I guess you miss every shot you don't take but boy howdy they really aimed for the moon with this one.
GeekJinx: This is such a strange way to understand the law.
Yes, a lot of games allow a lot of different mods to their games.
But as soon as people charge without using their framework or take payments when it's illegal - see you in court.
Blizzard almost went to brink, developing the framework of what you are modifying.
Crazy people...
shmevan_: "Sure you can compete with us using our own IP!" Said no company ever.
darkcardking: I'm still in the "What did they think would happen?" mindset. They aggressively advertised themselves and poked Blizzard directly, and what? Expected Blizz to go "that's nice dear, you have fun"? They FAFO. Plan and simple. There is no other outcome for them. Its like a guy playing Russian Roulette and being surprised that the gun eventually went off.
EnhancedNightmare: Blizz missed the bus with DoTa which was built on their game. They will miss these as well.
Mcdude02: Wow private servers are completely different than a traditional mod. A mod adds to a game somebody already bought, but a private server is a direct competitor to a live service subscription based game
Jiggy...: Turtle should have just asked Blizzard to provide them some kind of "Active Subscription" API that they can hook into, so that players have to log into a Blizzard account with an active WoW subscription in order to connect to Turtle Servers, so Blizz can still make their money.
pudgeypigeon: Turtle wow is a superior experience to anything classic offers. Legality aside, the experience speaks for itself.
GamingYooler: Turtle's put more effort into their modification than Blizzard has put into the game in 20 years.
williamst.germain3394: Surprised that DOTA 2 wasn't brought up in this. Considering that it was a mod in Warcraft 3, and was one of the most Popular game modes.
itzmagik11: The entire letter is just them begging for mercy
robertbook3999: I agree that this cannot go on because it is blizzard’s property and it is stealing…but…no matter what happens blizzard will have a black eye and a bad image. A small team of devs can make their game better than they ever could and that will be a forever embarassment.
mattydemisestreams: The thing is though Turtle WoW has already won the public relations war and any other private server for that matter. There simply aren’t that many people so out of touch that they readily come to defend Blizzard despite all their mountains of wrongdoing. Blizzard’s corporate minded scorched earth approach is the very reason that the overwhelming majority of the WoW player base regularly side against them despite still being slaves to their sub, so to speak. Obvious IP ownership aside, Blizzard have made it incredibly difficult to root for them in all of this, as historically, they’ve acted like outright villains in order to “protect their IP”.
solidicone: Blizzard isn't going to give a shit. It could look bad all they want, blizzard doesn't care. Simple fact of the matter is they've used things that did not belong to them and are now paying the price. The fact that they have done a better job than blizzard ever did isn't really the point. You can't steal someone's car and then when you get arrested for it say that you used it better than they ever could have. Doesn't work that way, never has, never will.
If I were blizzard I would still shut them the fuck down, no questions asks do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. HOWEVER... I would offer each and every one of the people who designed all of the bits they added on a job working for me and to bring their work with them. So either you get to continue what you're doing under me or you don't get to continue doing it at all.
tambow13: TurtleWoW is the best game ive played.
