This Zone Made Me Fall in Love with World of Warcraft

oyoystein: Alterac is a great example of the kind of worldbuilding vanilla WoW excelled at. They crafted a world that seemed... indifferent... to the player. Grand ruins, hints and remnants of stories you the player were not told about. Huge swats of wilderness where you were just a nobody passing through. No quests, no NPCs that were thrilled to see you, no great adventures other than that of pure exploration. Most RPGs put you in the role of some sort of saviour, but not WoW. You were just a sword-for-hire, for the most part.

simonbehrendt-n4w: All these other human kingdoms have so much more flavor than Stormwind

tudorgreere8407: It would be nice if you could make a video about the Hinterlands or some awsome quests like the one in Jintha'alor. It seems to me like the zone is not talked about at all.

RockerBoy20045: Crap, I'm getting massive hate from shelling out to Raid! Quick, release a lore video!! I'm onto you buddy

LawfulBased: I proudly remember... that at one point in time I was such a no-life psycho, that I managed to wall-jump my way up all the way onto the outer blackrock balcony, in true Classic in 2004/2005.

The place where you first fought Nefarian in the 2nd raid from Classic WoW.

Because I had nothing better to do then with Tier 2 & 2,5 stuff... and the Grandmarshalls Claymore. ^^

DuskyLore: For a long time now, I've liked everything about Alterac; the fallen Kingdom, the mountain itself, and the Syndicate. It certainly is frozen in time now, both from snow and ice---but also from long neglect. As someone who's grinded the reputation with the Syndicate to neutral (highest it can go), I sometimes visit Alterac to feel closer to my character's lore, as well as go ogre hunting in the spirit of "cleaning up" the old city. I do appreciate how there are still some working stoves in the main keep, and rooms still orange (hah) with the glow of candle and lantern light. Once you get some of the ogres out of the way, it actually starts to feel cozy again. Outside the keep though, It seems the only friendly face and semblance of normality is the goblin Bro'kin on the northeastern wall of Alterac City, who will buy and sell with you; perhaps lessening your need to return to a town.

Anyway, I appreciate your video touching on Alterac Mountain--and obviously, I eagerly await your video on the Syndicate.

Leisurelee53: "Terrible treatment of the orcs"

Uh buddy, those poor persecuted orcs invaded and destroyed most of those kingdoms you see ruined.

gj3717: Your love of the eastern Kingdoms and your forsaken leveling journey matches my own so much! From tiristfal to Silverpine and hillsbarad and now Alterac mountains.... Get out of my head!

silencehasended: Jesus this just brought back so many memories of my first time in alterac. Ended up having a massive battle against alliance there all those years ago.

Riftrender: Its crazy to me that the Syndicate leadership is not in the ruined keep and instead we have the rando ogres. Should have been for the Syndicate finale.

DrPluton: "How many orcs did the mages of the Kirin Tor use for experiments?"

Well, it was their fault for being orcs.

botsnkats: Strahnbrad is such a cool place to visit. The first time I went into alterac and read that i just walked into strahnbrad I was so excited to run around and go through my warcraft 3 memories.

14Forseti: I love these kind of WoW vids

jimmyodinson9841: Hmmmm. Orcs. Orcs that came from their world which they (through Guldan) had ruined their own world and came to Azeroth not only to live but destroy and slaughter and claim the world as their own.

Those Orcs you now comment on how they were treated in the internment camps.

Those Orcs that sacked Stormwind and why?

Because they could.

"Oh it's just their way of life and ingrained in their nature" I hear you weasels cry, well have a little grow up.

Actions have consequences and those camps were the reaction to their actions.

DISCLAIMER

michaeld451: I didn't know there were two zones in the World of Warcraft Classic

kyle-k4b: Man i've been binging your videos about wow and classic areas. Makes me want to play classic again.

SPCDUFFUS: Alterac always seemed cool. I don't think I'll ever recover from discovery Alterac Valley used to be a multi-day event and I'll never get that. There are WCIII RF modders making custom campaigns that made unique Alterac units, check it out!

Infernal_Elf: Lovely video. i Always felt Alterac mountains had strange borders to the neibouring areas. it kinda knits em together and u go between zones alot. But its a very intreesting zone indeed. And 1 of only 3 snowy zones in vanilla.

Ar1AnX1x: the hidden rogue location felt so good to discover for the first time, it had such a great mood how this small castle/place was up in the mountains in a very remote location in a foggy location, it fit the theme perfectly

bradleyberdan1390: love these stories. My first character was a pandaren back in ~2013, I remember very slowly making my way through the wandering isle and learning about the pandaren way of life and i thought “wow, this island is so huge.” Then I left and joined the alliance and was opened up to this whole world that made the island seem tiny by comparison. And i knew i was in for an adventure. The whole time i never forgot where my character came from, and the fact that I couldn’t return to the island really made me feel like an outsider repressing my people in a strange land. It was awesome.

jimmyodinson9841: One place I do love and did use the glitch to get to was the Ironforge airstrip but not the actual airstrip itself but the farms that overlook the wetlands just beyond it.

If player housing allowed it I'd probably set my lot there.

It's so peaceful and lovely just watching the dwarves go about their business.

Ruined now ofc with the flight path to the airstrip which lost some of the magical charm of the area.

scienceboy20814: What about mount hyjal? No flight point there.

jakubcislak9246: Nixxiom: And I mean, Arthas was here in Strahbrad, so naturally I wanted to retrace his footsteps...

Me: ... Thats a bit suspicious...

Nixxiom: In world of warcraft...

Me: That's a bit better.

JeremyDA88: I really appreciate when game developers do this. A location that serves no real practical purpose in their world, no quests to fulfil or characters to meet, and exists solely for the pure feel of the place itself. It makes a game world feel far more real to me. After all, not every place in the real world exists to provide people with stuff to do, so why should every place in a fictional world do so? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
