When it comes to popularity, I really don’t understand why the OSRS player base is so big, there must still be a lot of bots even after Sirpuggers’ video. I say this as someone who has played OSRS, alot. I got 7 skills to level 99, and earned the Quest Cape. All the negative things you mentioned for RS3 are much worse in OSRS. Skills take way more time, you cannot AFK them, and you have to click a lot, you click so much that your hands hurt, you can’t watch videos while leveling, and you get bored very quickly.

When it comes to mentality, in my childhood I also did not have the right mindset and quit RS a lot, then came back but everytime i came back it was hard like you said. But now I’m basically like you. But i left my RS3 main behind and started an Ironman 10 months ago. At the moment my total level is 2343 and I have 195 Quest Points. I have 5 skills at 99, and Runecrafting is 106, i got Thieving 120 yesterday. I did Runecrafting completely AFK in Runespan while playing Arc Raiders on my main screen. I was also AFK for most of time for Thieving, but I will start an active Heist grind to 200m XP in a couple of weeks. Yes, the best mentality for Runescape is: sometimes AFK, sometimes active. That’s the best mindset.

dimbous: At the end of the day, RS3 has no soul. It looks and feels like mobileslop. This is coming from someone who likes EoC and the new skills. The microtransaction system removed the feeling of achievement, its removal was a fantastic step in the right direction, but its too little too late. Theres no reason when OSRS can facilitate that desire.

The new player count will happen, but it will have to be drawn from other games or returning players from long ago. OSRS is not the target audience, nor should it be. Jagex has to maintain their commitment to the integrity roadmap and it will happen in time.

Jagex is clueless. Another key point they should be reviewing is expanding the free-to-play experience to attract new players. You can't force someone to pay a membership if they are not invested in the game, and F2p of Runescape is complete garbage. It is not as engaging as Members is. They should overhaul the complete free-to-play experience. Otherwise, it is completely impossible to bring new players in. It is just not worth it from the new player's point of view.

Dave-tv3hn: RS3, imo, really really needs to revive the pvp/minigames. I feel like pvp and minigames (moreso pvp) are a biiiig part of OSRS’s popularity.

HoldnNuggets: Seasonal players is one variable contributing to player count, but recently, jagex has been cracking down on bot accounts very quickly on both rs3 and osrs. Some people have said the response time to banning bot accounts could be incentivizing bot farms on jagex games. Could this also contribute?

iNinBreak: as an osrs player with almost 6300 hours on my main i must say after trying rs3 again on a f2p iron that i was actually enjoying myself again and thinking about actually playing more rs3 since im starting to need another break from osrs

Choggly: if you dont have the mental willpower to get a 99 then you shouldnt get a 99. its a massive achievement and making it easy just takes away everything that makes it special

FizCap: I tried getting back into it after the new ceo but honestly, the game is a mess. A lot of the systems don't work well together, just feels like mishmash of ideas by random people combined into one game. OSRS is just far more coherent in its gameplay mechanics and far more simple, rs3 you have to now max your skills to level 120 instead of the 99, you have to max out a bunch of skills just to have maximum efficiency or you will put yourself at a disadvantage, things like that. Minigames are dead, PvP is dead, clans are dead, there is no reason to interact with humans. This is someone who played runescape from 2007-2012 so I played through runescape's peak and saw it's decline and the game is just not the same
