The official season 17 rank distribution chart indicates that gold is the highest populated rank with about 29% of the playerbase, followed by plat (27.5%) and diamond being only reached by 19% (In doubles that is. in standard and ones the distribution is shifted even more towards the lower ranks)

If you get your data from rl tracker: it’s flawed, as it only features players who already have been searched in the database or have registered on the website, which tend to be primarily higher skilled players, thus giving inaccurate distribution data with a shift towards higher ranks.
