Why This OSRS Update Is One Of The BEST of All Time

mattmanncan: Finally a take that isnt just screaming "contracts bad! Jagex bad!". I agree the contracts are fumbled but the rest of the systems here are incredible. This is ehy we need to let jagex cook, if we just make more of the same we may never miss, but we wont hit either

ZurvanOSRS: Found u with mixology and click on everything you release now, can tell you genuinely think about every aspect of content as best you can before releasing and i really appreciate that, even though you say you dont have the contracts or experience youre bang on about it feeling like a slog and its kinda lazy to just put more orbs, continuous orbs etc i cant even 1 hit a half hp orb (83) because i dont have anc hat on the iron which is a shame because i did still enjoy the content but unfortunately im gear locked

Forged4War206: Yea I guess if you ignore literally all the terrible bugs, drop rate fuck ups, and contracts being one of the worst handled systems of all time, then sure, it’s a good update. But considering all that still happened, I would say calling this the best update is one of the most wildest takes of all time. In fact I’d say this was probably one of the worst executed updates of all time, second only to Forestry, which is saying a LOT. If anything, a lot of the skilling methods tied around this update will be worse for the game long term, and it seems good now only because it’s still so new. Anglerfish are already crashing and I wouldn’t be surprised if they reach sub 1k by the end of the year, but since Jagex and the player base seem to only care about Ironmen updates these days, I guess they don’t care too much about those implications.

doubleshine: Good to see others enjoying the update! You definitely highlighted how much more "alive" the chasm of fire feels now with plenty to do there that's not just a random dungeon littered with slayer mobs.

GielinorNewsNetwork: Your coverage of Yama’s arrival has been very informative: the worm and cloth videos were done very well. This video was a great sampler to call viewers to make sure they watch those videos.

currentcommerce4774: very thankful somebody is focusing on the positives with yama, because this really is a banger update with a small L whipping too many people into a frenzy. were all 30 lets start acting like it

G-lint: Always appreciate your holistic approach while discussing updates. I think anyone can see the glaring issues with contracts. Being bugged on release, lacking originality or intrigued. But as a whole, this update has been amazing! Everything you mentioned in this video, the skilling, the dry protection, the uniques.

If every update we got in the future was of similar quality we'd be the luckiest player base on the planet!!

marchofthenoobs: I fully agree that the update overall is fantastic, and includes great content for basically everyone. The contracts were a major fumble, and I think mostly because they were unpolled and clearly rushed. The contract update got delayed a day, then delayed another day, implying the team was rushing to get them done on time, and they should have just released a blog on Wednesday saying "sorry, contracts aren't ready, here's the weekly bug fixes, Yama tweaks, and more info on the contracts, they'll be coming next week". instead they released a half-baked update at the end of the week, causing the devs great inconvenience when they had to come in on their weekend to fix the glaring issues that should have been caught in testing.

I also disagree with your take on the sigil contracts. I get what they were going for, with letting lower leveled players farm for the contracts that high level players will want in large numbers as a mechanism for funneling resources down from the top, but as an iron, I would much rather the contract types got reversed: the contracts that provide oathplate shards or skilling resources should come from regular demons in larger quantities, and the more prestigious ones for radiant, horn, or completed oathplate pieces should come exclusively from Yama. Being able to farm for resource contracts makes more sense to me, and sounds like a more engaging gameplay loop, than being able to farm for radiant oathplate attempts down the line.

gyundie28: Love the insight. As an iron new to endgame pvm (30 Sol kc, 1 inferno, 20 tob completions, etc) I am a little frustrated with the contracts. I just want to send fun and challenging content, especially duo. These contracts really feel like a slap in the face to irons, even with the buffs. I dont think Jagex should balance the game around Irons, but I do think they should be included. Overall, very impressive update though!

rubixcubesolve: Love how this is a direct contrast title to gnomemonkeys video lol

carlwei: I don't envy the devs having to make these hard decisions. Knowledge is a dynamic second economy they need to balance around.

Challenging boss fights on release eventually get solved. Even if some of these contracts are annoying today, they'll likely be easier when the meta stabilizes. This isn't even accounting for balance after a few patches due to new content. Tough gig.

Allirin0The0Mad: Going to check u out more, good review (hit topics a lot of ppl skimmed over) did not feel click baited .

There was much that was great about this update, contracts are a bit of a mess but hopefully this will be fixed over time , I can wait

Knut_OSRS: It's funny because Gnomonkey did a video calling Yama contracts the worst update in OSRS history

tomasgonzales: Fair enough—and someone needs to sing the praises that are well deserved about the rest of the update—but the contract system is indefensible. Certainly also having an afk option to get the contracts is better than than the awakener orb system, but with awakener orbs the bar is on the floor.

The system itself (gated aspirational content) is widely disliked; I think to the point it would've failed with less than 50% if polled, which they knew, and precisely because they knew they didn't poll it.

While the bad doesn't cancel the good, the good doesn't cancel the bad either. It is a shame, because everything else indeed is excellent.

JM7900: Good video and i agree yama has been a fantastic update.

But nobody wanted another awakener orb system and we were promised its different.

Its great we can farm the contracts... but i want the rates buffed again.

Its so lame to gate content behind money or limited attempts.

The biggest bluder here is jagex had a great way to challenge players as everyone was enjoying yama (and finding it overall easy).

Idk why they made every contract complete end game... they could have done a better scaling to get more people involved. (Radiant aside)

Jraze's suggestion for a practice contract would also be great.

lolrw8: I agree with your takes regarding the ecosystem and the contracts and with the high skill ceiling for the boss, but my main criticism for yama is that the floor is too low for how good the armour is and how easy it is to get, as well as how that devalues bandos and torva. I think its a problem that it out performs torva anywhere that you use scythe/slash and that most melee encounters are slash biased. I dont really have a solution to raise the bartier to entry that also doesnt make the boss less fun, but it feels easier to get into than bandos and i dont like how that affects the progression meta and the economy

flavio4586: Based af

Free_BossmanJACK: nah these kind of updates are bad. everything mod arcane touches is awful

griffin5071: Dry protection is lame

pinpointwildlife7202: Im not at a point where I can do end game bosses but I love watching your content. I can tell you put a lot of effort in accurately picking apart the details of each update. Your content isn't reactionary like some others ive noticed but must of all I can tell you care about the integrity and how everything flows together in osrs which is what makes you stand out. Anyways, good shit brother keep it up!

LilskeevsGaming: I love how grounded this take was, very fair and articulate!

carlw.1692: Great video, I appreciate the focus on the positive aspects of the update (I also enjoyed the initial ones on fixing the pvm/skilling relationship in the game).

On the shale mining, the one issue that I had with it was that the xp seems a bit low, especially if you want to encourage players to try learning tick manipulation there. Right now there is the tradeoff between money and xp, but as farming Yama slows down, it seems destined to become dead content for everybody but irons (at least until Soup adds it as an usual money maker in a couple years). Of course, there are other ways you can look at it, and they can always go back and buff the xp, but it just struck me a bit that the xp was so low.

On the contracts, not to be too negative given the positive tone of the video, I was also a bit disappointed in Jagex but for the opposite reason as everyone else. As a solidly mid game player (I just started playing last year), I was excited to have an update I could join in on without needing to have the stats/gear to do the boss (although the duo giants was a good one as well but didn't have the same feeling as a new "end game" boss). Obviously this is a bit of a personal gripe, but after farming contracts the whole week to sell off at the inevitable spike when they went live (I was also looking for the lesser demon champion scroll), to get the rug yanked out from under me not once but twice by Jagex is a bit disappointing. While I understand the higher level players' concerns about wanting Jagex to respect the time and gold that they need to invest in completing the content, these seemingly snap decisions didn't respect the time others (most likely lower level players) had put into it. I still made a pretty tidy sum so it isn't all bad, but if the rates had been set this way from the outset there wouldn't have been this issue.

This also follows the same issue that others have raised that this seems to be the current MO of Jagex to release news/content and then backtrack within a couple hours. Regardless of whether I agree or disagree with an individual reversal they make, the amount of whiplash I get does make me question some of the overall leadership on this, and I wish they could just stick to their guns and see where things land/give it additional consideration before making a change.

asdfghjklxyz: Thank you, I love all your content. Yama fight is fun. Its simple enough that almost anyone with decent bossing experience can do it. And also has depth. You can challenge yourself by making the kills faster and more efficient. Kind of sad they called it a end game boss though. Although the contracts are much harder. The base encounter is not at all what I would call end game.

The contract update and the drop rates on release were absolutely terrible. I dont know how they were that far off the mark. Having to adjust the drop rate for oathplate by 30% and then making the contracts 20x more common. How can anyone be that far off? I could understand 10% off but not 2000%.

PaladinfffLeeroy: I am overall pretty positive on this update.

I haven't beaten Yama yet, I also don't have a purging staff, but I will definitely be trying it again soon. The contract things are probably out of my league atm anyway so I am less bothered by it.

I still struggle with DT2 bosses so I was never really bothered by the Orb mechanics either.

Maybe for the people doing that content it is bothersome and I get the complaints for it then.

But I love the rest of the update. Being able to smith the oathplate stuff is great. The Shale mining is the most profitable mining has been in a while and it actually feels pretty fun to 3-tick it.

Zxv975: Contracts were not made 18x more common. It's 5x more from Yama and 6x more from trash mobs. The farming of trash mobs does not give triple loot like the author of that Reddit thread thought.
