For cannons I think we're focusing too much on double cannoning. Just add a global cool down to remove attacking from both sides and increase the damage of a single cannon instead.
This would address both the damage and ammo issues by letting us use half the cannon balls. It would also work without having to make any new models and wouldn't require us to completely reorganize your ship with 4 dragon cannons.
SuperRookie117: Hey Rosey. I got an idea how this could be expanded upon.
In AC4 black flag you were able to crack enemies armor with regular canonballs and then uses your small so called "Swivel guns" to hit a crit spot you created by breaking the armor.
Maybe the crit spot could be highlighted somehow (a glow for example) to make the player click on it, fire the swivel guns and deal bonus damage
penyyyyy: this would also make 5-man raids good. 1 person will be driving, 1 is in charge of protecting the boat, 2 are in the cannons and 1 can be a flexible support depending on what things needs to be done.
iNeo1: I think it's good that there is so much room for stronger things when it comes to combat. Like barrows cannons, god cannons, special ammo, a larger ship with 3 cannons on either side? It doesn't really make sense for dragon to be the highest tier, since it's only early-mid game tier everywhere else in the game.
Or they can go a different route, where combat is slow, but you have to select which tile the cannon will hit, and every attack is dodgable. So for example your cannon fires every 10 ticks, does more damage, but you have to click where each shot lands.
Another option is to incorporate your player and crew's health into it as well. So certain attacks can hit you as well as the ship. Or if a tile targeted attack hits the tile on the ship you're standing on, you also get hit. An ability to hop out of your ship and board another, or get boarded by mobs...
vervixx9272: i had the idea where cannons can get temporarily stuck, kind of like how tempoross shock the cannons and prevent you from using it, when that happens you want to use the other side of the ship where the cannons arnt jammed

maxfrei499: Canon is ranged option and you dont need to change it if you add ram to fromnt of the ship as melee and some magic facility with 360 radius of damage. it can even take different materials and crewmates. Assasins creed black flag had ram mortar and cannons. you can also play with different cannon loads like grape shot, chain shot and heated shot. and i would love bigger boat for end game combat. Prayers on boat could be implimented via orders to crew to hide or to put up a barier of sorts. another option canons do significantly more damage but have longer cooldowns to make alternating sides more prominent feature. Inspiration for that is Sea Dogs game.
