Sodapoppin Compares OSRS vs WoW Viewership and Its Insane!

Lime_Slushy: For a WoW player, a major content release is the most important day of their lives. For an OSRS player, it is Wednesday.

downthecrop: There is new content ALL THE TIME so it's just another day

orang3blaz3: Literally no fomo in osrs, WoW is pretty much only "get it while it's hot" content

bobmanguy: I was already grinding something else, and the new stuff will still be there when I'm done.

JohnStyers-c5u: He's not wrong. I'm much more interested in the new peeps journey rn cause all the new content is still gonna be there and be relevant afterwards

GustaveTheBottomShrimp: 1. Most people don't do raids, nor care about raids, nor would they understand what's on screen if they tuned in to watch a raid

2. We are already doing stuff and each of us has a word doc with 45 other stuff we wanna do when we get the time, it's not like we are starving for content

3. RS youtube scene is much bigger than streaming scene. Peak RS content is things like GG or snowflake ironmen series or wow noobs discovering the game. A streamer doing a new fletching activity isn't exactly peak content even if the activity is new

4. People play RS when they feel like it not when new content comes out. There isn't FOMO involved where we have to be engaged or care about the new content and do it immedietely. The content will be there when we get to it, just like I haven't gotten to doing content that's been in the game for years yet.

tiltantheluckyone: The difference between osrs and wow is that there is a lot to do in osrs. so, new content is just more content in addition to all the other content i want to do. In wow, i guess, there is nothing to do. so, new content is the only thing that's relevent lol

Spilledbeansz: New content will be there. We’re not in a rush

TwoHams: If i stop doing gotr now I will take months to go back

frostpyr0: In WoW everyone is sitting with everything on weekly farm. Waiting for new content to drop

OSRS most people still have a massive to do list. So when new content comes out, its just more stuff added to the list

ratdoto2148: OSRS is fun to play, so people are busy playing it. WoW is a chore, so people would rather just watch it.

bellor123: boaty was getting 15k viewers on the new boss before he had to move to kick stream mid prog because of his contract. Oda gets 10-15k viewers on kick regularly if he streamed on twitch he would most likely get 20k viewers. Though pve doesn't pull the same numbers as some other events in OSRS, like the pvp tournaments oda pulled 100k viewers for example.

TheFippe: I think a big difference being that major part of the osrs content is on youtube. Thats where content pop off typically when it comes to runescape, has to be something bigger otherwise. I personally was busy doing the actual content than watching it on any streams

neo_child: People forget that the reason WoW gets HUGE traction is because their content patches are predictable, announced heavily, and are effectively seasonal content. People prepare for those content drops, they set calendar days, they drop their 2 weeks off a year for these expansions. You also want to see the new bosses being fought, you want the new content to be beaten and root for your favorite raider.

OSRS drops content patches like these and people are wanting to play the fucking game rather than watch someone do it. People would rather spend their time playing the game and taking their time with the content than racing to see who's first.

Holeinshoo: I've never been someone who watches streams so take what I'm saying for whatever that means. Very rarely do I engage in new content when it comes out. I'm usually invested in what I'm already working on and look into the new content if it ever becomes relevant to me. I haven't trained my herblore in a LONG time, but I'm going to be grinding it soon, so now is when I'll start to look into mixology, despite it being out for quite a while now. I'm not someone who enjoys figuring out new content so I'll just find a guide long after it's been figured out.

Many people are at vastly different points of progression.

Torvis_Maximar: Dude doesn’t understand how big 9k is for a Oldschool stream. Besides Boaty and Oda almost nobody ever breaks 5k outside of major events like Leagues or DMM All Stars

SlimothyPlays: We're all in the middle of our own grinds. We'll get to it when we get to it.

sl4ye: the "go here kill this" game versus the "log in and do whatever" game

iamme725: The only reason to do new content as soon as it drops in osrs is either if you're a youtuber/streamer so you can benefit from the hype of a new update, or if you're a main account and you get a big drop day of release you can sell it for insane prices. Other than that, everyone will just do the content whenever they feel like it because its not going anywhere and will still be relevant in a few years.

mandrue2: Wow has around 4x OSRS’s average view count, so it isn’t surprising that Wow has much higher peak view counts too. Also, OSRS gets new content much more regularly than Wow, and the playerbase in OSRS seems to be much more divided in terms of what type of content they’re interested in. A high percentage of players rarely PvE for example.

IPIay01: someone in chat made a good point. We're busy playing the game, unlike WoW where a lot of people watch the new content before doing it.

euh38264difje: The part he’s missing is that OSRS game devs actually put a LOT of work in unlike wow. There’s at least new content monthly

zelkins33: Not everyone playing is doing end game. Blizzard creates a rapid way of getting to end game - so everyone is doing the same shit at the same time.

AcesPrune: Varlamore pt3 can't be compared to an expac drop on WoW. The better comparison, is once the expac drops, Blizzard tends to phase content, Val pt3 is basically a phased content patch. The release of Varlamore itself, and the day one attempts of The Colosseum saw 10k viewership on like 30 different streamers at once. Also, he is looking at the streams at a bad time. For WoW, it's all about dropping into whatever person is streaming the new content... in OSRS, people actively wait for "their streamer." And the average player also is more likely to drop into their clan Discord to do the content, than watch it. And the most important factor, is, Savix peaked 20k because every streamer was watching him do it, including Oda, and when it looked like he was actually gonna manage it, people flooded him to congratulate. It was a big moment for the WoW crossover, and I love Savix, but sorry, many people only even knew he was doing it BECAUSE of Oda and several over streamers covering it. Collective viewership matters, many times have I seen all of the 3k Andy's in OSRS jump to 20k, cas they got a big drop, or a world record while running a raid with 6 other streamers.

proudpatriot3491: I'm in no rush to get to the new content, it won't be made irrelevant with future patches.

demonr88: It's because people like to see you experience things they have when first playing runescape.

Noobface: I’ve got too much on my to do list to care about an expansion, I’ll get to it sometime this decade
