SAILING RELEASES NEXT MONTH! OSRS

zero380kyle: Mom: Why don't you go play with the neighbor kid?

The Neighbor kid: Gnomonkey

skrooz7864: HE'S RANTING ABOUT MOKHA IN THE SAILING VIDEO

YESSSS DUDE <3

Pimaster31415: Still more training methods than construction and firemaking so we'll see how fleshed out it feels

TheoryWiseOS: I'm generally very excited about Sailing, which is doing what I think every OSRS skill should: Offering actual rewards for leveling it at every stage in someone's account. It doesn't just become relevant at level 75 (slayer), for example. The output is, as always, the most important part of any skill in OSRS.

BUT, my biggest concern is Jagex being too conservative with training methods because it's a new skill and they don't want to scare long-standing players away. I'm not sure what exactly they can do here, but I feel like they had to pull back from making really novel, exciting training methods because the expectation of RS skilling is standing around clicking a thing. I hope this changes, and Barracuda trails are a nice alternative, although one I fully expect to be heavily undertuned for their difficulty much like Hallowed Sepulchre.

For as excited as I am about Sailing, I always maintained that it feels like a 3rd or 4th new OSRS skill, not a first, because it's so ripe for potential and excitement, but feels persistently dragged down by player and developer expectations of it needing to fit the antiquated mold of OSRS skills that have barely changed (at their core) for 2 decades. It can't just be mining or agility, nor should it be, but half of it feels pigeonholed into that because that's the standard set by the game.

earthminutes_: sailing is about to be hella undercooked

UnOrdelyConduct: You mention all this stuff for mining, but all that stuff came out post osrs release. I agree they are rushing this in. Maybe this should have been released early next year with a bit more content they are planning on adding later. Either way though I think the way it currently exists is enough to get people into it and ready for when more of the content is out and not have to worry as much to lvl to get to said content

Sonyaxoxo: can we all go on a romantic boat ride

samuelarthurs4458: I really thought this would be atleast a year away. The dev team went craaazy this year

joegargulak4867: The rush it out and fix it later hasnt historically worked well, hope im wrong but this doesnt inspire confidence

b3ast226: Is it too late to vote no?

randomunlistedvids: I see sailing going 1 of 3 ways.

1 - They get enough backlash that it kills their drive to ever release a skill again. Look how bad Warding FUCKED the pipeline for Sailing.

2 - It goes over well with a bunch of surprises for us.

3 - It's a bland nothing burger to us, but the new players and Reddit Andy's love it so much that the next skill will follow this same formula.

I think that with the general direction of Jagex to be aimed at bringing in and retaining new/mid game players vs catering towards the end game players, I'm putting my money on this feeling like a great release for people that haven't been playing the game very long. Whether or not this hits the mark of "successful launch", I'm not sure. I don't see this as being the end all be all DOOM! of the game, but this will definitely be very indicative of what we can expect from future skills.

Sailing feels "safe" and that does not fill me with confidence.

jones877: Jagex needs to add the cult of sailing to a sailing quest. Also an npc that hates boats hanging around the docks.

Tyler_Gill_Music: Nothing screams open ocean exploration quite like December

hweigel528: I am looking forward to sailing but it's missing tight integration with a high-level pvm encounter.

Not just "oh you need 80 sailing to get to the island" since that just makes sailing another skill grind. The pvm encounter needs to involve boat movement and combat

ethanf6788: Gonna have to sail to get to raids four boys

SirArbeitslos: Mom wake up! My opinion just dropped!

thegonz701: I'm disappointed that they didnt include sailing pvm like they teased in early blogs. At least it wont be like Hunter release. 1000 people per world with 10 bird spawns lmao

alsoyes3287: A higher tier Kraken would be awesome

Imm3diacy: I think I'd rather they delay sailing until most/all of it is ready for release instead of doing it piecemeal

MeatshotTF: I think that when I consider this from a long-term perspective, I'm glad that Jagex is putting out what seems to be a solid yet "bare bones" base for sailing without too many extra training methods, bosses, etc. because I'd rather that players get a hand in designing the "high-end" pieces of content through their experience of the skill.

This method of release allows for a better use of dev resources and a more agile response from the dev team, and I prefer these characteristics over some extra content upon release that may not meet its full potential without gathering the mass player feedback first.

YanagiharaFlameBirds: non-stop stream until skill cape lets goooo

MorRochben: To be fair, every other skill has had decades of updates behind it. While it isn't good, not having as much training methods as other skills isn't something I'd worry about at this point.

The007lord1: I'm both excited and terrified to see how sailings is on a uim, the cargo hold could be the biggest meta change to uims since the looting bag.

but also dying on an island could mean you need to make a new ship(or always have a spare ready) and sail back in an hour or else the cargo and you stuff gets deleted.

serenaishere2639: I hope my expectations are blown out of the water but...I still don't see a "why" for sailing being in the game. What useful new niche or mechanic or role is sailing for? As of right now, it seems it exists as a way to walk on water to get to some resource islands. Which is very underwhelming.

Also, I am a huge hater of "release now, finish later" game design.

ChkOSRS: thanks for telling me how to feel about sailing idk if im excited for it anymore

LunarcomplexMain: On a serious note, it does feel like they're releasing Sailing too early, not that it's broken, but say, "here's for sure what will be added anyway even if we held sailing back a bit" kinda feel. So instead of releasing Sailing with some x amount of content, here's 1/4 of the total content we know for sure we're adding. Which, I personally don't mind as a player, might be better for them to clarify this to us, but as a dev, I would rather flesh things out as much as possible, but then again, this is runescape, wouldn't this kinda fit the theme for skills when they first start out? Also it'd be hard to mention Firemaking as a skill vs this, but then they spend dev time on this vs something else... There's just, alot to talk about here lmao, overall very excited.
