My solution was an option in the settings that will not stop your boat after you leave the helm. Depending on the situation you may miss a turn, but it saved more than a few runs due to no longer having the slow down effect.

AndyCormierYT: You can do zero-time skilling activities (fletching arrows, alching, etc) while sailing, including when steering the ship on the helm. I've made millions of gp alching while charting and doing courier tasks, not to mention alching at salvaging. Unrealistic bonus tip, if you don't need to teleport, you can use tome of fire and Bryophyta staff to use no inventory on runes.
