drake713: Points of interest/subareas. If a quest wants to to go to Witchdrop in Coertas you'll skim the pins on the Coertas map to quickly find it than trying to figure out what some of the fancy letters spell
kupocakey: They're for putting little bits of string between when you're mapping out the conspiracy
XerKoro_neo: They’re usually landmarks or areas of interest that are named
DespadaPlaysGames: I'm more than sure that they're to denote exactly where the little name text is referring to. So in this instance it's to mark that that casm is called Witchdrop.
fluffells8361: So pins are just named locations/POIs. Fun fact about Witchdrop. It's called that because that area was used by the Ishgardian inquisition to throw heretics and witches off the cliff as a form of execution.
ShuraIKX: They’re marking the exact point/area of where the text name for it is - so if you were looking for a specific entity or gathering a specific item and it says it’s in “Witchdrop”, you’d most likely find it around the perimeter of that pin
weiss4855: Generally they're points of interest and other little bits of visual storytelling.
Witchdrop given the name is about what you'd expect, but it's a pretty big hole down there, so the pin is not just there to translate the Eorzean written on the map but also to let you know hey, that quest marker might actually be down here- granted now they have an arrow on them if they're above or below you.
dalgona4819: Just pinpointing specific areas, especially since they're often part of quests etc
zacharybenson2911: Points of interest/subareas. But they also count as discovery areas for small amounts of xp, you must "visit" each of them usually to get the "Mapping the Realm" achievement for that zone. There are also hunts and kill quests that state where something is using "Zone - Pin Name" The mapping the realm achievement increases mount speed slightly in some areas, where others need you to buy an item.
arzedeu: As others said, it's for points of interest/sub areas. And, it's also for gathering. Gathering log will say that this item is in witchdrop, ao i travel there and get the ore or logs i need.
It also fills in the map and makes it feel less empty.
highroller5335: Soo something like gathering quests don't just put the orange "go here" circle on your map. Instead the npc and quest description will say "you can find this ore east of witchdrop" in this zone.
So I'd scan the map for witchdrop which is that pin and fly east looking for mining spots...
If you have your sightseeing log there might even be a lookout point for you to get a lore description for that landmark.
anasyn: Just POIs ultimately. They're useful for gatherers for the most part, as gathering logs will give you areas, like witchdrop, within a greater zone. So if you're doing gathering, they come in pretty handy. Other than that, PoIs.
russelliott7385: Please tell me that isn't a serious question. Have you never seen a map before, any map? You've perfectly encapsulated why every roulette feels like torture despite going perfectly well.
FloNess1: They're so you know where to look when the gathering book only tells you the map and the pin that it's nearest :D
kemonomimi2924: Fishing spots or gathering nodes
PapaLantern: Thing lives there forever
sadi5713: the pins mark the secret underground Allagan hideouts. one day you will be ready to explroe them.
Axolotlsarethebest99: Mostly gathering, gathering nodes (especially fishing) are based on area and the fish you get in witchdrop are unique to witchdrop waters, not even a slightly west pond will have the fish or ore
bolladragon: The word in the Eorzean language directly underneath the pin and word also reads "Witchdrop," so it's just translated map text of what that place is called.
axeorlay: Witchdrop is the name of that hole, not the zone. If the name is area wide, no pin needed. If the area is small, it gets a pin
coffeelord5514: sometimes those pinpoints helps when monster hunting or just enjoying a new sight seeing location during the day or night.
blazedoutgaming8409: They are absolute lifesavers when doing Logs, that’s what they are
SHO0WO0: to hold the map up so it wont fall off the board
oszaszi: Probably big fate or S rank or quest point of importance
CastDeathGames: Witch drop is where the bots and hackets do their thing
Setuaro: Is he new to FF alone or MMOs in general?
