The State of FFXIV One Year of Dawntrail

RockR277: I disagree with Garrett completely. it's absolutely better that pvp has dedicated abilities. Its a million times better than it was before.

Fingleberrys: Congratulations guys! You're big enough to get bot spam seconds after a videos posted now

LerThiL: I have no clue why they cant make a Rival Wings roulette, it would revive the mode for casuals.

normalmighty: Haven't been checked into the XIV community much, because I'm on a break more due to community burnout than game burnout, but you guys are some of the only XIV youtubers with a vibe that I can still get behind and enjoy watching right now.

jduc005: auto-generated captions doing "Well Kyle, Yes Karen" is unforch but very funny

seiverdamross: trust us guys, we had PVP the that had all the PvE actions and gear mattered and what now and it was a nightmare. this is why they broke it off so it would be more balanced and more people would do PVP.

socram3254: I think Occult Crescent is a big misuderstanding from the devs of how people enjoy field operations. I'm a Eureka/Bozja enjoyer myself, and what made those places fun was the fact that they were easily accessible content that fostered a sense of community by requiring people to communicate to progress successfuly. OC just doesn't have that and actually goes on the opposite direction, its fast pace makes so that stopping to type in chat is a waste of time because you're always running to the next thing, and because everything spawns so fast the content gets old faster, you do pretty much all the FATEs and CEs in 2 hours and then it's just repeat. And the biggest sin of it all is making Fork Tower the way it is, I've never seen this community being so toxic before because of a piece of content, the way it was designed turned players against each others. So, imo (you're allowed to disagree) OC failed immensely in creating a community shared space

random-numbers: The thing about Dawntrail being a “quality of life expansion” is that is what they spent a lot of time on in Endwalker too, so veteran player apathy only continued to grow. I’m glad you guys have found a reason to be excited again, I hope everyone is able to get reinvested again soon too.

AstroWut: Something that might be a little hard to see with fresh-endgame-eyes is that there had been a lot of talk before the expansion's release about DT being the start of the next 10 years of XIV, and there was a real hope that we would see shake ups that would pull the game out of the stagnant formula it's been locked in for years now. The actual release has confirmed how completely bolted down they are to the structure, and that at best we'll get maybe 1 new experiment per expansion that doesn't follow an already established template (Variant dungeons, chaotic raids).

Occult Crescent is sort of the bow on that whole deal. A lot of players were really banking on it bringing something fresh and engaging like Bozja did, but it just really didn't fit that bill and after a 5 year wait between exploration zones it's actually a step backwards in a lot of baffling ways. There's pound for pound less to do in OC than there was in Bozja, and design failures that were clearly identified all the way back in Eureka were plopped into their brand new zone seemingly without having learned lessons from that go-around.

There was a small excerpt from the [translated] live letter that I think is pretty telling. ["The staff would go "Oh we can stop around here because older content is also like that" and they will not try harder to make even better content, which is not very good, but due to increasing content creep, we did not manage it well"]. It seems to me that they've moved their core staff onto new projects (probably the unannounced FF17 or something along those lines) and left less seasoned devs behind to steer the ship on XIV. They're never going to say "our A and B teams are off doing projects we can't tell you about, so it's the C team that's going to be treading water here from now on", but it really seems like that's what we're seeing. If they don't have the experience or drive to push beyond what the game has done before, it's really hard to hold onto the hope you guys are talking about.

WayTooLateTV: Nahuel is on freaking fire with this one. The editing oh my goodness the editing. The interstitials. The text breaks. The effects. I am more than impressed. I hope they're eating good tonight on Garrett and Kyle's dime.

TheIvoryDingo: With regards to this past year of FFXIV... the game itself is in my opinion mostly fine (aside from some small niggles). It is very much still enjoyable for me in the same way it was the years I played before that. Only reason I'm playing less is because I have less free time and got more hyperfixations. :P

What I DO think has become worse... is the overall FFXIV community. This past year (and even a good bit before that) they have been getting more and more complain heavy and usually not in a manner I think is healthy for anyone. I won't deny that some of it is to blame on the game, but an equal part of it is more related to the community itself.

KetchupBlood94: I think that FF14 needs a more flexible release schedule until they find what they need to do for the next 10 years.

the thing that ARR had as in it's favour is the need to find an identity, that eventually lead to a consistent schedule, that was kept for 10 years.

Dawntrail needs to be the ARR of the next 10 years, and that means giving up the same schedule they have had for the last 10 years to find the next big adventure for WoL.

It is about trying out a lot of stuff and seeing what works at the cost of peoples expectation, because the only way you can exceed expectations it to go against it.

C2Cin2Dreams: Hi, first time viewer, the algorithm recommended me the video. I disagree that the developers have done enough to surprise and delight me to retain my attention for long. For me, there just isn't enough variety in the grind, since the patch cycles take a little too long, and the story is just not where I want it to be at this time. That being said, glad the content is hitting for you folx in a positive way.

Good podcast, you got a thumbs up from me.

Churee: The big issue with Dawntrail is not that it hit a low point, it hit SEVERAL low points at the same time. Worst MSQ, worst content release schedule, worst homogenization of jobs, worst endgame, worst state of QoL backlog such as glamouring, housing etc and worst content reward for players. The MSQ is the big one, it has always served as a dam holding back the other issues.

It's just a perfect storm of "oh fuck what happened here I'm out" for the vast majority of the playerbase. They need to do BIG changes for 8.0 and actually address their sphagetthi code once and for all or this will just continue to go downhill.

Azurephen: History time: PvP actually used to work the way described by Kyle. Gear with pvp stats. Abilities worked the same etc (r.i.p one inch punch making ast's panic). It was overwhelmingly unpopular even more than now. And basically the "slow doesn't work on bosses" thing applied to tons of abilities, confused people etc.

They actually did use to save certain things till trailer/live letter- like content not just adjustments. I recall battle on the big bridge being a legit surprise when a trailer debuted. But ya know- sometimes people didn't know content was coming out and were left at the station while the hype train departed as a result.

The hype cycle tends to be more concentrated in the media tour. So lots of surprise at once, then not many after. That said they sometimes need to be a little more clear on surprises- like they teased Chaotic- everyone was like "wow a full raid, i wonder how 5 headed dragon is- are the trash like criterion?"- then when it was just one boss a lot of people got ahead of the hype train and ran over.

BrokenArrowX: The small yet significant QoL changes in minor patches are always what I'm most excited for.

jtspender: I'm actually very excited about the 7.3 story. But TBH my desire to talk about the game in public venues has been beaten out of me by the DT discourse.

That said, all

Nesious: Putting my feelings about the patch aside, I just want to point out you are almost certainly the only content creators alive who I can watch and hear a 'get your boats ready' Port Alexander reference in the middle of a long-form video about the current state of FFXIV, and I appreciate you deeply for it.

Raika63: one exhausting thing in the ffxiv community is any hopes and dreams get shot down with reasons why it can never happen and quickly devolves into a weird defensiveness

Lu186png: I heavely disagree with Garret regarding the PVP abilities.

FrankysABoysName: DT met my expectations. I havent encountered story or content that put me off. I've been playing off and on since ARR, I also played WoW and other mmos for over 20 years now. I honestly do like the predictable format - I think people wanting it to be closer to 3mos is fair, and fairly standard and I can also agree with some of the more grindy stuff being pushed up a little. I'm happy with what I got, and anything else is extra/a pleasant surprise. That being said, once they cut off PS4 offically I am curious about how many more surprises we might see. As great as cross play is, I do think that is a factor on a lot of things - its expensive, every platform has it's own way of handling things, you get a whole subset of bugs for each platform, and then you have to take system capabilities into account.

ThousandDragoonLink: It really is unbelievably crushing to have loved the endgame midcore content that was Bozja... Go all through Endwalker without anything like it, and then have to wait nearly an entire year for Dawntrail to finally deliver what was meant to be more of that... Only for it to miss the mark in such a catastrophic way. I don't understand how they moved so far from what made Bozja so great and endlessly replayable to the really boring/grindy-feeling treadmill that Occult Crescent is. And honestly I feel like it's a general problem they've started to have with developing content for 14, since it's a very similar vibe of other new content since Bozja like Island Sanctuary and Cosmic Exploration.

I'm not saying spreadsheets don't have their place, but someone at CBU3 really doesn't understand this type of design is not fun in the slightest... And it's once again crushing knowing this is what it is now, for all of Dawntrail. And it's going to be another few years until we are a year past the next expansion's launch to maybe get something better... I know a MMO is a big ship to turn, it'd just be nice for them to try to adjust faster than they do.

continuallyblessed44: I’m mostly an msq player and my goodness getting through Dawntrail has been excruciating. I haven’t had this much of a struggle since 1.0. I’m on 7.2 and just don’t feel like dealing with the game right now.

JackThor1: Meanwhile gw2 posts a picture of a lute and the player base goes crazy.

PipoPoppy: Even if I disagreed, I at least got the complaints for 7.0 and 7.1.

But I've got nothing for 7.2 because I've been really enjoying it.

I think DT has pretty much perfected the difficulty for Normal dungeons and raids and I really like the fight design.

The Extremes have been really solid, with Recollection being my least favourite so far, but still far from terrible.

When I was levelling my crafter and gatherer to 10 to prepare for Cosmic Exploration, I was wondering if I would like them in a grind context, but I had a bunch of fun with Cosmic Exploration because I really liked the strict mission times and going for the Gold medals.

And I've been basically living in Occult Crescent because I really like the fight design in the CEs and FATEs and the Phantom Job system. The FATEs die really fast, but they also respawn really fast, so I never feel like I'm missing much when I miss a few (which is why I think people also don't really stop for them, the respawn pace is really fast). They should look at the scaling for them, especially when considering players with no Riding Map (and they addressed it, so seems like they will), but I think levelling the Phantom Jobs has been the real highlight because even if all of the abilities aren't of the same importance, I really like the ones that do affect how you play.

Love blasting stuff with Cannoneer, love the Thief Sprint, how Time Mage synergises with casters, shoutout to the Oracle risk-and-reward ability Starfall and the dynamism of Geomancer's weather effects and a bunch of others.

Again, not all of them are hyper-significant, but I feel a sense of freshness in my play every time I move on to levelling the next one, which makes for one of the more satisfying grinds I've faced in a while.

I've gotten into a bunch of lvl 20 Gold farming groups and I think it's fantastic MMO farming content because of the number-go-up effect.

My only other Field Operation experience has been the first two Eureka zones (made it to level 36ish before I moved on to something I had much more fun with) and to me this is an incredible improvement.

The elemental wheel seemed neat at first, but then you learn it's substanceless busywork. People wait for the FATEs and NMs, but they're target dummies.

OC's world itself has much more interesting landmarks and I like the Survey Point system much more as an incentive to explore than the arbitrary few magicites you had to pick up and nothing else.

I know people talk about the Lost Actions, but I never made it to them and OC gives immediate access to this system that does at least somewhat switch up your gameplay and ties it to your grind, making it an actual substantial reward system.

So ultimately my only true issue is that Forked Tower is so hard to access. But I know I'll at least try it once (especially now that it was announced premades will be made possible) because I'm already planning to level all of the Phantom Jobs and got my relic in there because I'm enjoying it so much as grind content. It also helps a lot that I can cap my tomes in there, so it was great for my recent roulette burnout.

Time flied by with this patch for me and I'm still not done with it all because I can't

sinom: so about the "we haven't seen any surprises yet"

Was chaotic alliance raids not a surprise?
