"The Duty Recorder"
Me: Oh yeah...that thing.
deameo6525: Just fix the friends list its been 84 years
lafajet: A small note (well... speculation really) on the recordings being deleted following patches: I assume this has to do with the fact that the recordings are logs being parsed through by the game. If a patch changes an ability (or removes it, e.g. at a new expansion launch) the parser will play it back and use the current state of the game. This might lead to damage calculations coming out differently, if it even knows what to do with it at all if the ability is no longer in the game, making the recording inaccurate and probably leading to a whole slew of weird errors.
In order to combat this, I imagine they would need to maintain an enormous backlog of every iteration of every ability that has ever been in the game, corresponded to each patch it has ever had, which might be more work than they are willing to spend. At the very least, it would have to go back to the point where they first allowed it if such a thing was enabled.
Don't take this as an argument for or against the feature btw, I'm mainly trying to add some context to this particular part of it.
Edit: So I'm wrong on the specifics here, but the problem still stands (sort of). Please see the reply from no00ob under this comment.
NekkoBlue: I’m really praying the Raid Planner coming in 7.4 doesn’t turn into an abandoned feature like this
felixamari157: There's a hilarious thing that the best way to use Duty Recorder is with a mod. XD
DacianGradaMusic: it seems to me they're "afraid" of unlocking it for the newest duties for fear of making them easier to solve (kind of a cope reason, but plausible for them tbh) and thus they keep it as novelty for gpose and never even improve it past the basic stuff it has. It's such a shame because if done well and paired with the upcoming raid planner thingy, again assuming it's well implemented, would be such a boon for aspiring raiders and veterans alike. Shame, big shame.
UlfgrimRaneth: And It's crazy because that with the A Realm Recorded plugin you can see the full potential of the tool that we never got. Fast foward, rewind, camera control and even event points during the duty like wipes and such.
Pmak: Duty Recorder needs an overhaul for current raid tier so you can look at debuffs and actually have a way to read them and see what went wrong without having to record and watch a damn VOD.
They also need a FF and RW button. maybe a 2x 4x and 8x button.
Maximusrex4575: I would like to see updates to Grand Company Squadrons, it's something that has been left to rot but it's still somewhat required to an extent. The AI is too stupid to do most of the stuff, and the controls are too basic to try and control them out of mechanics. And as the ARR stuff has been updated for Duty support it has made some of the instances even worse for Squadrons. Also, 90k GC Seals isn't that much anymore, wish that cap would go higher.
In a super awesome world that is never going to happen I would like to see Trusts, Duty Support, and Squadrons integrated into each other to some extent. Like Duty support is replaced by trusts from the beginning and would use members of the Scions that are more background characters, and the story premise of squadrons is changed that it is a Scion group led by you that is coordinating with your chosen Grand Company.
Zarr: This honestly embodies the biggest problem I have with FF14 right now: I feel like there are so many issues with what is presumably simple solutions, yet they just get left as is.
They already have all of the framework for the duty recorder; how hard can it be to add a rewind/ fast forward button. They already record all the actions taken, how hard can it be to display an action timeline for a player you click on.
But it's transferable to other issues as well: "lack of content". FF14 does not lack content. It lacks a decent system to reward you for doing the existing content. "Fun" is not the motivator. Fun should be the feeling when doing the content, but you should be motivated by rewards.
See the latest relic step: they gave us reason to do the roulettes and we did the roulettes. It felt like the game had more content then, because we were doing more content. This is the frustrating thing: They already have the biggest part of it solved; years worth of content and systems... and they just fail to take the last step to make it worth it. I don't mean to be negative, I'm still enjoying the game, but it's frustrating seeing (seemingly) simple fixes left by the wayside instead of actualizing their potential.
newgroundguy123: I'm with the theory that the duty recorder is used by the devs to capture in game footage for the patches and promotional videos. Instead of keeping it in house they let the player base make use of it so they can show and post content related to those marquee pieces of content they'd like headlined
x_Reaghan: What the fuck am I suppose to do with 20 glamour presets that are all full.. they did not think this over..
skylargraves340: The duty recorder hypothetically can be used in every instance. If you know you know
VerekThornwood: Housing without glitching in FFXIV is my dream game.
apollo9815: Rewind, fast forward, playback speeds, toggling off certain players (like gpose), free cam with more zoom/fov options, all features that should’ve been the bare minimum.
bergeremit2530: I forgot about that ... wow. I do not understand why the recording is so limited. Does this feature save the datq first on the server ? Maybe that ? So performance is a problem?
LarkyLuna: It being a replay of actions player took is nice to see where the server thought you were during a mechanic
If you had a personal recording you could see your displacement
Too bad it's only for irrelevant content
darkrosegaming1662: This could have so great for helping for raid and see something I did wrong I wish or see Easter mech
yabiyabi: I lost it at the dancer and the dancing dragoon. I ALWAYS wanted to use duty recorder, but the fact I need ready check from everyone makes me scared to use it. What if it says I am recording and... what if someone says no? Then I cannot record
rahldraconis708: I'd say the worst feature of ffxiv are people that call for other creators to get doxed and harassed over a joke
OhNoTheFace: It just keeps disappointing
Rabfour: First! Woo woo!
doom-f7s: I do actually like the “everybody has to agree to be recorded” part. There absolutely could be work arounds and while yes streamers and youtuber can and do record without your permission a good lot of them at least put peoples names as initials out of respect. I feel like they could easily swap names and character models all out for generic players instead for those that dont opt in
GarethFairclough: I came from star trek online, and the glam system in FF14 is a horrible, restrictive, clunky mess by comparison.
STO has all the appearance stuff in one place, and you can switch outfits whenever you like, wherever you like.
Dyes don't exist, because it's all included in the "tailor".
There is no armoury chest because, again, it's built into the tailor.
There are no limits on glam plates (aka outfit slots in STO).
You don't need to call or use a ticket to change your hairstyle, nor do you need fantasia to change your face. It's all in the tailor!
Their tailor is an NPC in various hubs which gives you access to a screen with a huge number of drop down menus, sliders etc and a live preview of your outfit. You can swap out parts in there, change colours, pick different hair styles etc. You can even change your character model with various sliders, letting you make a horrific frankensteins monster, if you really want!
Oh, and even better, you can even export your outfits as a file which can be shared with others. It's such a good system.
Shame that's the only good thing about that game.
STO is a 16 year old game, and based on code from a 20 year old game. The "FF14 is too old to change the glam system!" excuse is nonsense.
jade_harley413: TL;DR explanation of the patch thing is the duty recorder uses packet replay. However, every time a patch is released, the packet codes are rearranged (this is why ACT breaks when a patch releases). Thus the old packets are invalidated, and duty recordings break.
guffels: I totally understand why you can't rewind and fast forward but wow this thing is under featured
