FFXIV Japan Age Rating Changes CERO Rating Shift

Shinbu150: If I'm understanding it correctly, it doesn't limit the sale to anyone under 17. Its just a suggestion for the parents or guardians buying the game for the child. Ehh... most people just ignore it anyways.

To be honest, that one scene in Endwalker with a certain General should have probably raised it anyways. Or that scene in ShB (we all know the one).

marluxiavii: No Cero is the arrancar energy blast attack

megagreatgodlywhiteshark2929: Hopefully we can have more better body sliders in 8.0?!lol

mayrakyla: Assuming this is because CERO reviewed the gpose functionality and asked SE to change something relating to it, I'm guessing this means you'll still be able to turn the camera around in gpose after 7.5 and they don't have to add a "your character must be facing the camera" warning or a strict limit to how far you can rotate your camera in gpose. I'm sure a lot of players are relieved to hear that.

nikkicoyotie8431: I'm already expecting bad actors to try and use this change to justify ERP in places like Novice Network

youngimperialistmkii: lol g pose prompted a rating change in Japan.

fredd3218: This seriously open very new possibilities. Remember that the Tesleen cutscene that got cut? The CERO rating was one of the main reasons.

selay333: Honestly could see censorship coming anyways as Visa and Mastercard have been going on a power trip as of late and trying to force everyone to do as they say and that goes even further than lewd stuff that's just the easy target.

Insanity_pepper: I'm guessing the previous rating was why we never got another body horror incident in Shadowbringers after the beginning. Likely more than one scene would have hurt their status so people getting morphed was omitted. I believe they said the scene was censored as it was. I really hope this is an indicator of more maturity coming in the themes and subjects.

People that think this means censorship have reading comprehension issues.

Also, you have the voice for it. You should start your videos with a nice loud "PEGI 13!" and have the notice in eorzean.

SigmaTheWhiteFlame: Hopefully this means we can start getting some saucy emotes. I want the pipe smoking emote, I want the seduction emotes, I want the wine bottle emotes. All are already in the game that NPCs can do, I want them all.

Maugre: Oh no, the rating went up in order to NOT be censored.

The horror.

akridx5712: I blame the 2B leggings

rodimus580: I blame SPHENE’s JEGGINGS.

miweneia: i love how it says "but if you're under the age of 17, please check with your parent"

surely they can imagine a 16yo reading this shit and running to their mom like "mooom can i keep playing my catgirl fantasy rpg"

windows_x_pp: I want blood effects when you are fighting...

bolladragon: Considering XVI was a more mature game made by this same crew, I am curious if they'd take advantage of a higher rating in the future.

tkd3541: You know what caused it ...all of the mods with their crazy sex stuff. Also, people with their crazy bars. There is NO way for a player to know the age of a person. This is a problem I have mentioned to GM'S before. You want to control names that offend people but wouldn't control sexual content on a 13 game rating. Then you implement sexual items like a dance pole and somehow you're shocked. lol

BloodKitten_: the whole thing with the shadowbringer trails with "the milk man" i'm surprized it wasent pushed to D just from that.

jaymercury651: Crazy to me some parents would let their kids play this game knowing what's going on one click away in public PFs / social scenes. It's literally harder to find family friendly content in the Other tab than it is finding adult themed content.

PrincessBubblegum: Im surprised it wasn't at 17 plus cause our WoL can stripped down to their under garments

CommanderSly92: Sigh if it’s only for G pose, that would be a non factor. I wanna see a more mature story, darker story, something with a massive twist. DT was a massive letdown, besides the fights, they were awesome.

user-ez5je6mt4k: In limsa lominsa there should be a Z rating. Everyone knows why.

skylara_k: There’s an emote coming up in the future that it likely relates to.

Lrbearclaw: So.... what you are saying is that Y'shtola can die again and be resurrected nude once more... and we can see it?!

Yoshi-P, I'mma need you to do something VEEEEEEERY funny...

1Mrstephen: Maybe we get a more adult version of the game with this. Been playing since 1.0 and this game is stagnant in all areas right now. It’s incredibly boring atm and needs a boost.

SuikodenGR: Mod Community - Ceros Z

talithmara2589: Honestly, I'm all for making any MMO rated 17 globally purely from a perspective of party members.

Don't get me wrong. I babysit and tutor. I don't hate kids. I like kids. But it's also undeniable that kids can be... kinda crappy sometimes. I used to play a lot of Free To Play MMOs with my ex fiancee and it was night and day when I started playing an MMO that had a subscription based service; most players now had credit cards or parents willing to pay for them, which really bumped up the overall maturity of the community. And I don't mean maturity in an NSFW kind of way. I mean maturity in a "not adding @@@@@@@@@@ to the end of all your messages so it takes more space in an attempt to get noticed" kind of way, and in a "let's party up" instead of "NOOOOO I WAS HERE FIRST THESE MONSTERS ARE MINE GO AWAY" kind of way. (I also fully expect at least one person to reply to this post with "mesos plox omg KSer stop @@@@@@@@@@@@@ F5")

For the record, this paid MMO that was more mature than those other ones? Yes, those F2P ones were Now that I play FF14, the community is definitely closer to how I remember WoW feeling, but that probably just says more about what I was coming from for WoW to feel so refreshing by comparison. (Either that or WoW's just had a sharp decline after 2008 when I used to play it.)

As for the game's content: I really like how FF14 has already handled it's more uncomfortable story elements. They're one and done. They don't dwell on them. I think the only such discomfort that truly lingered long enough to really disturb some people was the questline involving "the milk man" as I saw him being called in the comment section. I like the acknowledgement of "this world actually really sucks sometimes" with moments like Roaille and Yotsuyu's backstories, as just two examples of "yeah, we went there when writing this, but also we're moving on from it so you don't have to think about it for long." That said, I do still also appreciate the creative freedoms that a higher age rating would allow, as well. And I do agree with the consensus in the comment section that "the milk man" probably should have bumped it sooner.

It's not that I think the writers SHOULD push the envelope with "the milk man" tier stuff more often, it's moreso that I think they should have the freedom to tell the story they want to tell without shackles. And I know, as a writer, myself, that trying to adhere to age ratings can severely limit your potential to flesh out characters (no, not like that) by being forced to omit thoughts and interactions that really get to the core of who they are. I'm not saying "traumatize the hell out of Alisaie for the hell of it," but I am saying "it's okay to explore the deeper impact of several key events, like the Crystal Braves Incident and how it makes Alphinaud feel on his worst days, or what Krile's recovery from being captured and experimented on was like." It's okay to do these things. They don't HAVE to. But the OPTION should be THERE if they feel it needs to be.
