FFXIV Is Sacrificing the Present to Fix the Future

edgarlarios4718: I don't mind the content drought for the sake of quality of life improvements. What gets me is the drastic drop in story writing quality.

biocajun86: For me, the sins are deeper than that. Things that have been coming up over the past couple of years that are quite disheartening. What imo the community truly needs in order for the game to start having good will and faith in it again are:

- SE to give a proper budget to the FFXIV team proportional to the player base and the amount of revenue and profit the game makes for the company overall. The budget is currently a pittance from what it should be and instead, our sub fees are used to fund other ventures like the more recent DISSIDIA mobile game.

- CS3 to stop taking from FFXIV’s budget and resources (including talent) to work on multiple other titles if that be to the game’s detriment, which up to now, it has been

- a renewed commitment to the player base that we can tell is happening through a tightened focus on updates, patch cycles, and patch quality.

- and lastly, for when Yoshi-P speaks, the result matches more of the expectation than what we currently get (I realize people will never be fully satisfied, but I’m also tired of feeling like I’m being sold on a PR campaign. Words are words, but actions matter)

iPlayOnSpica: They could've introduced all this quality of life without vomiting terrible msq. System improvements mean little when the narrative of a narrative-driven game sucks.

terrabite6261: idk if new players are gonna be eager to play when we had the meme of the new monster hunter crossover be like: "Oh yeah finish basically the entire story up to 7.0 and be level 100 which takes like a couple hundred hours." Also glamour is never going to be 'fixed' imo unless we have something like WoW or GW2, any other change is just a bandaid on top of 5 other bandaids.

UwU-catgirl-OwO: My biggest complaint that they are gutting the things that make ff14 unique just for ff14 to become a nostalgia slop train. It’s just cross over after cross over and I just stopped caring.

skylargraves340: I played wow for 17 years started day one. Cataclysm was known as a horrible expansion for many reasons but the main reason I always saw was that they took a portion of the team to update old content. I felt it was a good move and needed for the future and going on something like 16 years after release I would say that proved true. At the time however the content felt different and more sparse. The general grumblings of discontent began during Cata but also most of its most popular systems began during that expansion as well.

My point is that I’ve seen this play out before. Assuming they rebound with a full team focused going forward, this will be nothing but a blip on the very long timeline into the future.

MissKashira: Given that people's primary complain is the main storyline, it didn't suffer because they were working on a graphics overhaul and dye channels. The raids were great. The dungeons were great. The jobs do need a rework, but I think people would have been more willing to wait for that had the story not been so bad. If you remove Wuk Lamat from Dawntrail, you have a perfectly functional, thematically coherent story. We would have met Koana in Sharlyan where he was educated and has relationships with several of our friends, so it makes sense we're willing to help him rather than a complete stranger traveling to a land they've never been to who knows nothing about us asking us to help her become ruler of a place we've never been to. It also doesn't make sense Wuk Lamat doesn't know about her people given she's lived among them her entire life, however it does make sense for Koana because he was educated overseas. He had a fixable flaw. He didn't appreciate his culture. We could have come to appreciate his culture with him as we moved through the contest. Wuk Lamat's flaw is she's stupid. We can't fix that. So it makes the first half of the story pointless with her.

The second half of the plot is more relevant to Koana too. He's been pushing for advancement the entire time, so imagine when he gets to Alexandria and sees where what he's been pushing for can go. There is no doubt in my mind that the story of Dawntrail was written with Koana as the main character. And if you eliminate Wuk, you eliminate almost every issue with the plot. So the question is, why was she added? Did some exec want to show off the new cat girl models they had just finished? The story makes so little sense because they took Koana's story and warped it around a character that didn't originally exist. Whoever's call it was to invent Wuk and give her Koana's story should be fired. It was a catastrophic mistake that can never be fixed.

I can't recommend FF14 to new players anymore. I used to be able to say, "It starts off slow, but then it gets really good." There is no way I'm recommending a game with, "It starts off slow, then it gets really good, then it gets really bad, but hopefully it gets good again soon." You can't lock all content behind a 500 hour story and have that story be bad. You just can't. The only way I see this game surviving in the future is a path of onboarding new players that doesn't require them to play through the story or pay 50 bucks to skip it.

vixnomancer: I am a new player because I started on the launch of FFxiv on Xbox and I am sad to see how many people are just upset with things! Maybe its just because I am a new player but I have loved the game from ARR to the end of Dawntrail. Even playing through it again on a newer alt!

I genuinely hope the pain players are feeling now truly pays off! I hope to play this game for years to come! Thank you for the wonderful video man! I love your videos your guides have helped me so much with blue mage!

Avoleth: The problem is as it's always been for almost the longest time post Shb, the solution has been too little too late. In addition, so many content additions have been implemented with almost embarrassing lack of awareness with implementation such as OC, Island sanctuary, Criterion, and the elephant in the room that is the unchanging same content structure that is frankly boring and glaringly inflexible as it is badly paced.

Chaotic was one of the few things DT did right in terms of content and reward but just like so many features of this game the subsequent updates are basically abandoned. The good reward structure it has is no longer relevant in the vertical gear progression hamster wheel this game is so it falls on it's own sword.

Which also brings up that so many things throughout this game's lifespan have been abonded, free company builds, squadron, now blue mage(for this expansion at least). It shouldn't take 2.5-3 years for things to get a once an expansion update.

For me the worst part that compounds everything as an ARR launch player is the communication and the dynamic from the dev team. It's so utterly opaque and one way. They have lied and misled us so many times, they are no where near transparent enough or show how feedback is used or acquired. Why do we not have ingame surveys? where are the community managers? Q&As?

@thenastynamazu, this video comes off as defensive imo, too much of the last two expansions have burnt the good will that has been built up and it is inexcusable for the quality of product loyal and caring players have been given.

beliddell: I've been so away from the game since dawntrail, its nice to see this video and these comments about it. The game has to change if it wants to keep itself relevant.

needMoreInput: Stop the inventory management. I do not come home from work to manage inventories. It was a dumb concept, It has always been a dumb concept.

aaronspain3387: I don't have the time to dedicate to raiding. What drew me to FF14 was the storyline and the purposefully-separated job functions with dedicated classes. I like tanking and healing, but on the Materia (Oceania) servers, the opportunities to actually TANK or HEAL, are almost nonexistent. I can't sit around in Duty Finder/roulette queue for an hour in the hopes I get to actually do a dungeon or a non-hardcore raid. I've been playing this game since Shadowbringers, so I've already finished most of the non-dungeon content, and I used to be an achievement hunter. I want something to do in the endgame in this game that isn't time-restricted, requiring me to schedule my game time, because I have a family to care for. I want to be able to log on for an hour every night, a few hours on the weekend, and do PUGs of dungeon and older raid content, maybe craft a housing item or two, and feel like I've actually achieved something, rather than spending the entire time sitting in a roulette as "Job In Need" during peak hour, waiting for over an hour per dungeon.

no-stresscat1519: "Final Fantasy XIV is simply a better game after Dawntrail." I agree. THANK GODS IT'S OVER!

I just feel bad for the people coming behind me that have to experience that turd of an expansion.

brachyzoid: The more QoL is added the less I play.

That's not good.

HihimiHimi: Job homogenization doesn't exist.

Darkkfated: I 'unno, this sounds like a whole lotta copium to me. "We'll forget about how bad the game is right now in 5 years so don't worry, be happy," is not a compelling argument for the game being in a better place now than it was a couple of expansions ago.

Yoshi P and Company have been in "In Case of WoW Emergency, break Glass" mode for most of this expansion. They saw how the competition was absolutely them in terms of content cadence, reward structures, housing systems, and glamour/transmog features and were forced to shell out (previously held back for no good reason) QoL improvements to stop the playerbase bleeding.

Class identity keeps disappearing, patches take twice as long come out as the competitions' and yet still only contain mediocre amounts of content, Housing is still a cruel joke for most players, inventory woes continue to plague collectors, and it's very clear the game needs more money or more manpower pumped into it in order for it to keep up with the competition, but Squeenix seems content to continue to siphon all the money FF14 makes and light it on fire with garbage like that DOA Killer Inn game and making 15 new Mobile Gacha slop-fests that will get shut down in a year or less, instead of investing it back into their only current consistent cash cow.

I guess I'm in the opposite camp. I'm very pessimistic. I see very few reasons to believe that the game is in a better place right now or that it has anything resembling a bright future. Not with Yoshi P at the helm, and not with these massive content droughts and 3 years between expansions. The game survived mostly on the back of its MSQ for a long, long time and now that we got an xpac with a horrendously translated and butchered MSQ (which wasn't all that great in Japanese either, mind you), the cracks in the rest of the product are starting to show.

AShadowedGamer: they are slowly getting there but as a long time veteran player it can be deeply upsetting that it took this long before we we're given what we should've been given 10 or even 5 years ago...

that said if they ditch their crappy in house engine an adopt a more powerful one and fix housing by giving everyone a damn home instead of constantly adding these micro updates which only serve to annoy people further cause they dont have a house yet an dont want to abandon their community or friends on their data center an inconvenience their playing experience then i think they'll be in a better spot 100% an will probably be able to at the very least bring back 30% of the people they lost cause of how DT was implemented and perceived.

purgatoriprytania5382: There’s no ‘present’ to sacrifice. The game just feels like a relic that can’t compete with a million other, better games.

bloodyninja2411: Lol comparing endwalker as bad is hilarious especially the story vs friendship trail

Redcritxx: im in the camp of ill believe when i see it

cutejustice: Well, we’re promised one thing and then we get another.. I still question whether we’re getting double the rewards because it still feels the same. Credit to them though for variant dungeon revamp which was great (even though the rewards was a bit of a bust) and alliance raid extreme (even though that was well…. Poorly communicated). But I’m happy they tried something.

Rip to blue mage though… . Hopefully BST is worth it.

snowpegasi: Dawntrail has been good for the gameplay side of the game with a few hiccups like loot and rewards, but FFXIV will always be a story first type of game, hopefully they learn not to shove a character obsessively down our throats in the future, side and supporting characters having their own arcs and stories is fine but at the end of the day the player character needs to feel like the main character, Ryne in Shadowbringers and Alphinaud in Heavensward are a gold standard, they carried the emotion and we carried the hype in the story and nobody stepped on anyone else's toes when it was time for them to step forward, also if they wanted the Scions to come into conflict maybe next time they can actually commit for more than 5 minutes.

pandamonium9255: Every person commenting on this video has a correct statement or two. I really wish the devs would stop this hell greyhound bus ride they’re on and get back to what made this game cool.

angrywigglytuff: I enjoy your videos but you don't need unnecessary pauses between some of the words when reading your script. It is jarring to listen to as it isn't natural speaking.

SergioNehama: they sell themselves short on purpose. they like to say adding/changing anything is difficult and painful so that they can getaway with the player base not asking too much and being very happy with whatever little they actually give. it doesn't help that every new stuff they add is always the same unfulfilling thing...over the years there where lots of cool ideas they half-assed and never really fixed, from the very squads the wol was supposed to lead up to rewards for criterion. there is rarely a thing they introduce and its a complete banger. and this isn't nitpicking, they go out of their way not to disturb things too much. go figure their motives.

TheBaca219: ARR still needs a rewrite. I have read smut more compelling than whatever that word salad it is. The world is fine mind you, how people act and communicate is definitely not. Partially due to bad translation but it's not all. I am in the middle of heavensward and at least now it's comprehensible.

Areayea: I bet the next expansion is gonna be big! This one really did seem like a vacation kinda like we were watching someone else and learning cool cultures (I loved first half of DT)
