yggdrasil1706: Don't pull the boss if a sprout is watching the CS.
z-devoured61: In 24 man raids when mobs/ paths can be designated
Grp A is always on the left
Grp B is in the middle
Grp C is always on the right, as well as Grp B is usually the Main tank for bosses
Mirinkaiser: Rule 5... yes, thanks. It drives me NUTS when I'm trying to heal the group and everyone is as freaking far as humanly possible from each other and I have to manually heal everyone separately.
XFry333X: IF you (nontank) do pull mobs (intentionally or not) you need to immediately run towards the tank and stand ontop of them. If you want to be "that guy" at the bare minimum you should be smart about it.
And before people argue with me on it.
- White Mages, Ninjas, Summoners, will intuitively park ontop of the tank and blast off. Don't piss off the healer and/or dps too because you want to be that guy.
- Your tank will be less annoyed with you if you're being helpful. Making a tank chase you around as you're pulling ahead will probably get you shirked.
xtuffman: When I play as a tank, I don't really care if people run ahead and pull mobs before I can, so long they bring those mobs to me so I can AOE and grab their aggro.
If the other party's member keeps running around like a dizzy cockroach kiting the mobs endlessly, it just makes the run harder for everyone else and even more for the tank that "needs" to run after them to grab the aggro (sometimes even needlessly speending up some cooldowns).
In short... got the aggro first? No problem, just bring them to the tank. Period.
NeoMiles74: Another good rule: If there is a Black Mage in the party, try not to stand near them. Especially when they have their ley lines down. If the boss wants to do a spread mechanic, and you're on top of a black mage, you are obligated to move so they can continue being a Fire 4 turret, but being out of the way of them before the mechanic will make them not panic and move and they can keep casting uptime.
Feast_: For Rule 10: yes it's great to treat sprouts well, sometimes some people take it too far, and by the time the sprout is level capped (or even Lv60 ) they'll have a ton of bad gameplay habits that will aggravate other players
Treat them nice, but at the same time, educate and encourage them, and don't over coddle them
Edit: as for Rule 14, it's also important to keep in mind that if somebody who isn't the tank runs ahead, grabs aggro and the tank let's them die on purpose, this is considered Lethargic Play in the guidelines, iirc. Running ahead isn't reportable, letting somebody die on purpose is
TheLMBLucas: I 100% agree with all of them. They are all true. Just some quick notes as a veteran who takes long breaks and very rarely tanks:
1 - Some "wall to wall" are awkward (long paths, tons of AoE, traps...) so it's ok if a new tank is unsure about doing it and you should respect that. If it's not one of those, you can gently say "you can pull more if you want" and if the tank doesn't do it, you know that it's a new or extremely rusty player.
2 - If you are tanking a low level dungeon, please don't pull everything with the bare minimum ilvl gear, the healer will go out of mana because every 2.5 secs your hp goes to 20%
nighttimestalker: 15-
When in Arum vail, you can and should skip about half the dungeon by running across the wall.
The faster this dungeon is over with. The better.
ancaci: when i was a sprout i used to watch a video guide for every dungeon till stormbringer, i was so anxious to do any dungeons and raids(maybe because i was a noob white mage that was still fishing for cure 2 procs with cure 1
sakuraonisan2673: Wall to wall pull but let the team know. I had a sprout healer recently and he was very happy that I asked. He wanted to go slower and I respected that. We had fun and tough mistakes were made we all congratulated him and he got all the commendations
SleepyDogGirl: If you are new to a fight, please just tell someone so we can know what to expect <3
mythfluent6185: as a tank, the reason I care at all about dps pulling is because aggro goes everywhere and now I'm running around like a crazy person trying to gather all the mobs, they are actively making it harder for tanks.
4NSW3RM3: Nothing to add, just commenting to make Algo dance to the rithm
SquigglyTheAsianPotato: Dont pull the boss before the tank, the healer will magically forget how to heal you
rfygband: If you get into raiding, don’t grief a party for a parse. Getting good numbers is great and all but at the end of the day your number means nothing and all you accomplished was wasting 7 other people’s time.
cyan_wings5420: "Though shalt not prog-lie!!!!!"
urfren6510: My biggest pet peeve is when people pull for me when I'm tank. There is certain moments that call for it, but some are just a thorn in my side.
I've had countless times where the healer runs in front of me, pulling everything, then doubling back, causing me to have to turn around to grab aggro (if its not just one or two) which then accidentally tricks them into thinking I'm stopping. If were already stopped and the healer grabs more then yeah understandable, but full on running ahead to grab before I've even got there just feels wrong and throws me off. I do prefer when healers actually tell me I can pull more or less, it helps a lot.
Other times I've had dps pull more groups after I've purposely pulled less, because I noticed the healer struggling, and cause us to die. Even in some cases, I've been blamed by the healer, even though it was literally not me! I've had so many dps pull for me, and its just a struggle. I honestly believe it's something up to the tank and healer to decide, never dps.
Recently I got yelled at by a support in Aurum Vale. The dungeon is already tough for me, I struggle with it sometimes especially at different gear levels. I walked into a room and only pulled half of it, but one of the dps grabbed aggro of the other half, which overwhelmed me and the healer. I was then blamed for "not keeping aggro" after I died, even though I did have aggro the entire time. Not only did this happened once, but TWICE. My friend even noticed it too, our ranged dps was just grabbing more than I could handle, and the support just kept giving me attitude.
I think another unspoken rule would be that if you play support, you shouldn't be getting mad if someone dies. You should be prepared for the possibility and not immediately get toxic, in fact you should be letting them know that your having trouble healing their playstyle.
DavidBowieFan1990: I didn’t know about bringing the stackmarker to the bosses hitbox and I’ve been playing ffxiv since almost 5 years!
Dracounguis: I don't like when off tanks stand behind the boss with everybody else! Because when that inevitable 'every tank gets a tank buster' move comes and they're too slow to move. All the melee have to run away and lose DPS!
Off tanks need to be on the sides or on the front!
Falvern57: As an addendum to Rule 2:
If there are 2 stack markers, do not EVER stack them together. This is not negotiable.
Necrofitz: For any tanks that have issues with people regularly pulling ahead of you: use your sprint button. Not to defend against other people pulling, but because this is literally a mitigation tool when you're bringing pulls together. Sprint will keep you ahead of pack 1 and out of auto attack range as you get into pack 2. If you have issues getting aggro from a full pack quickly, use your AoE attacks. Every standard tank AoE has increased enmity and good range. One use will defend against everything short of a DPS unloading their entire two minute in transit to the next pack.
That's it. That's the secret to getting a pull together and controlling the pace. You speed up dungeons, take less damage, and if you're good at spacing your mitigation options (reminder: Arm's Length is a damage mitigation tool too) everything should go quite smoothly.
Edit: Quick add - always pop sprint right before you enter aggro range of the first pack too. You get 20 seconds if you activate sprint outside of combat. Only 10 seconds if you are currently in combat.
drakologarnus7248: just an FYI "unspoken rules" are probably the best way to destroy communication. especialy with newcomers. it falls under the same catagory of " social queues" not everyone everywhere knows every social hint, its a terrible stigma that creates huge problems. in the end communicate dont just ASSUME everyone is going to know everything because they went to youtube and looked at a video.
phase269: The you pull you tank way of playing is a harsh mindset, just go and pull but try to stay alive until the tank got aggro, and tbh the wall to wall mindset is like that to, only wall to wall pull if you get okay-good damage, if a healer is out of rescourcess, you as tank are more dead the alive and there is still half of the pull? Then maybe slow soen a bit, pull less mobs, because maybe one dps is not AOEing or the gear lvl is not high. But the rudness i ever come across was the "Wall to wall tank with an new healer that asked twice to slow down." they didn't want to listen to the healer and we wiped several times, really miss the "Are you okay with big pulls?" asking times in chat.
tjitjan: As a tank i dont mind if people run ahead of me in dungon and pull everything
Aslong they come back to me so i dont have to chase them
llMoyChanll: NGL, "You pull it you tank it" mentality is 1000% against TOS.
rickyricardo4331: You've rescued my sanity with Rules 7 and 13. I always post "first time" on my first run of a dungeon or trial.
