He then assaulted a nedic woman, who was also a priestess for Arkay, who is known as Lamae Bal, cursing her with a disease as the first vampire. The curse essentially cut off her connection to Arkay, putting her in a state of neither life nor death. This state of undeath destroyed Arkay's cycle. Something that the divine could not undo.

jamesaxis: If I remember correctly the first vampire wasn't created for any major reason. She was just created by Molag bal out of his feud with Arkay. He violated a priestess of Arkay, and then because Arkay rejected her she disowned both of them and went out and created more vampires.

So why were vampires created? Because a deadric prince wanted to insult a god.
