wario1226: I'd like to point out that I got both unlockable characters WITHOUT beating the first night lord.

For some reason, after my 3rd attempt, I was rewarded with the pocket watch drop and the item in the Jar Shop.

Not sure what the exact requirements are, but beating the dog is NOT it :)

And you can unlock the Duchess without defeat a nightlord.
