Count.Saruman: Interestingly, duelling shields actually existed in real life. The german fencing master Hans Talhoffer had a treatise in which he talked about 'duelling shields ["fechtschilde"] from Italy- probably Milan- where you had an oblong shield with blades affixed to the top and bottom.

He also wrote about why this is kind of a bad weapon. First because it's very easy to get the pointy end stuck in someone, and these shields much harder to extract rapidly due to the perpendicular hold. Also because thrusting with them requires you to sacrifice your defence and can let the opponent walk around you.

It's also understood that a shield like this is very fatiguing to carry and thrust with, again due to the weight on top of the hand and the grip being perpendicular to the blade.
