Debunking Elden Rings Worst Theory

TarnaxTheBarbarian: I think you misunderstand cults, and it leads you to some incorrect conclusions. Cults have a negative connotation in modern times, but "cult" is actually the root word of "culture". Cults in themselves are basically just religious communities, while being "good" or "bad" would reflect individual cults.

ekamitayoga: Just realized that Golden Order Fundamentalism trying to understand Order/Elden Ring is why is can put those who live in death to rest: it is channeling the very structure of reality that had death separated from it. This is why other holy stuff doesn't work on it, because they aren't connected to the ring which had death removed.

Harold4447: Theres a real irony in the communities obsession with Godwyn because he's a perfect example of GRRM's writing style, where he sets up a prophetically ordained character who seems perfect, GODwyn - son of Godfrey, he's a perfect warrior and is "badass/cool" in all the ways we typically expect a hero to be.

Then boom, turns out he (probably) commited suicide/was murdered by a bunch of female assassins after he worshipped a destructive dragon cult and got turned into a living pustule upon the world who corrupts everything.

I feel like George is literally beating us over the head with Godwyn screaming that "THOSE WHO FULFILL PROPHECY WILL NOT BE WHO YOU EXPECT". Its part of his wider critique on monarchy, and really human nature, asking us to confront our expectations about people and the social structures we reinforce and reproduce as a result.

Yet the community, somehow - has taken the opposite away. That Godwyn really was the coolest bestest most epic MAN to ever live and the whole game revolves around him and he was going to be super cool in the DLC but he got retconned.

If i was being mean, I think it proves George right - that people fetishize the trappings of nobility and warrior culture to a point that even the games fanbase is in denial when the game - quite explicitly shows you - that Godwyn is a weird cultist loser whose turned into some horrifyingly deformed creature. Also he's probably the product of cuckoldry.

Sodala14: In the Japanese version of Elden Ring, the "Dragon Cult" is referred to as 竜の信徒 (Ryū no Shintō), which translates more directly as "Dragon Believers" or "Followers of the Dragon." The term "cult" in this context refers to a group united by intense devotion to a specific figure or power, in this case, dragons. Rather than implying a heretical or fringe movement, as "cult" might in modern usage, I still rather tend to believe it here suggests a spiritual following centered on dragon worship that was actually accepted and integrated into the Golden Order after the war with the Ancient Dragons, so long as practitioners didn’t cross the line into Dragon Communion... The idea of the Golden Order turning a powerful former enemy into an instrument and ally by incorporating them makes still sense to me.

lordcumulon: “Theres a new guy in town, and the new guy also happens to be your wife.” I would love to know how Godfrey reacted to this information

Jarrot: please God let Alex Garland watch this

charlieperaltaf: I disagree with the point that Miquela is indeed old enough to knew Radahn at it's prime, but not old enough to see Godwyn alive. The Morgott throne intruduction gives you points, since Godrick seem to have his place there, but it's uknown why Ranni, who supposely died with Godwyn and has remained hidden, has a throne there as well.

pepperonithief: One thing that still seems a bit muddy to me is the timeline of the night of black knives. We know that Ranni orchestrated it, but we also know form the Cursemark of Death Item description that Ranni perished at the same time as Godwyn as part of her conspiracy.

"Ranni was the first of the demigods whose flesh perished, while the Prince of Death perished in soul alone."

If the Carian children weren't elevated to public demigod status until Radagon married Marika, Ranni should have already been "dead" prior to their marriage. Yet Morgott calls out her throne at the foot of the Erdtree with the other demigod children. Which means that either Godwyn was killed during Radagons reign or that Fromsofts own timeline is a little whacky here, or if we really wanted to reach we could say she was given the honor posthumously. Not sure honestly.

ScumMageInfa: Everyone: I LOVE GODWYN OMG I WISH GODWYN WAS ALIVE

Nap-55: The Death Knight Helm also has "golden lightning" on the unbroken circle on the back

dmp_dini965: My problem with the new community is them watching the biggest lore guy and assumed everything he said is 100% canon.

Mifflin815: So Amon, just like Godwyn, starts a cult within his ranks. And those who follow this cult are trying to become like Godskin Apostles?

VaKtube: Is it possible that the statue is a fictional depiction of Miquella, Malenia and Godwyn together? Even though Miquella maybe never knew Godwyn he maybe would have worshipped or felt a spiritual connection to Godwyn, like an ancestor that died before you were born but you've heard many stories about. The statue seems to imply that the 3rd person is either a parent, caretaker, or protector of the smaller 2 in the statue. Miquella and Malenia may not have had any real parental or caretaker figures. So instead he imagined Godwyn as being someone who would fill that roll if he were still alive. Melina makes some comments implying Marika was never very "motherly". I have no idea what the emotional needs of a developing demi god are, but I imagine that sort of emotional neglect could maybe play a roll in things.

ghostdreamer7272: The golden age of the erdtree can have other ages included, I don’t think these are strict time periods , but overlapping.

FloDsu: I loved the video all the way up until the end. One of the best lore videos on Elden Ring so far. The end was a bit of a let down. Why would the statue be of GEQ? There is no established connection between her and the 3rd generation of Marika - Miquella and Malenia.

I would also hesitate to call Miquella a child. It seems his curse is one of forever being stuck in “early stage”. No matter what he attempts, he never managed to see it through. None of his plans …(drumroll) … mature. His outside appearance mirrors that.

But yes, for whom would a child put itself through unspeakable suffering? His mother. Interesting cliff hanger. Still one of the best lore videos ever made. I hope you further explore the connection between Marika, GEQ, Matyr, and the Carians. This breaths also new life into the hypothesis of ‘the GEQ as a split off aspect of Marika’. Hope you also further explore the Farum Azula Elden ring symbol, the girl with the three wolves, the ‘seduction and betrayal’, how Marika met Godfrey and how she met Radagon. Great stuff!

solighandhi6439: Does Miriel's line about Godfrey being 'hounded' imply that to the rest of the Land's Between it looks like he was driven out in disgrace? This would only make sense if there was some event that was interpreted as a failure.

Marika of course has her own plan, he wasn't really hounded. Same thing happening with Messmer. The rest of the people see Godfrey being dismissed in disgrace.

What else could that failure be but the death of his line and his tree?

VehramSultan: I remember becoming a fan of Godwyn's character while I was getting the most popular ending, Ranni's ending on my first playthrough (I had the game spoiled for me from watching Jacksepticeye). It actually prevented me from getting her ending because I disliked her for the murder of Godwyn. My thought process was the fact that he was murdered like that despite being such a badass character in his day (I'm also personally super into dragons in any story)

On my second playthrough of the game, I remember finding many Nascent Butterflies in places related in some way to Godwyn (For eg Deeproot Depths). I asked myself why such a rare item was so common there.

Then when I found the Golden Epitaph and then it made sense that there must've been (or was tried to be brought about) a connection between Miquella and Godwyn. However, the strange wording of the spirit in Castle Sol later in the game"Your comrade remains soulless" was always vague to me and so I thought that maybe it's the demigod in the mausoleum outside being talked about.

Then I found the Eclipse Shotel and that dismantled the mausoleum theory for me by connecting Sol directly to the Prince of Death.

Then I fought Fortissax on that playthrough, which I had never done. Man... I was underleveled enough for him which turns out was a great thing, as he's glass cannon; it let me take in the fight. I loved everything about that fight (except the mostly reused attacks). The setting, the music especially and the aftermath (of reading the Remembrance of the Lichdragon and finding out about their companionship).

I still listen to the Fortissax OST till today and it always sounds like a loud, constantly uproarious, but deeply tragic and grief inducing track to me. As I would imagine a dragon's grief to be.

And since playing Bloodborne, I know that FromSoft can never make fully "good" characters, which is something I love. I've always thought of Godwyn as having taken part in some sort of "Ancient Dragon Communion" and being part dragon.

All this, after getting to the Haligtree and seeing the statue (which I had first identified as Marika). I immediately thought that it might be

ekamitayoga: Man I love these long videos

rocki_bb: Jack the cattiness in your video is needless, especially when the few things you've gotten "right" in this video are things other theories have literally said FOR YEARS.

I've politely watched your videos & politely left supportive comments in the past, because the drive to be "right" in this community can be incredibly toxic. I've pushed myself to avoid adding to that aspect of the community, going so far as to leave places that I felt contributed to it. I've politely kept my opinions to myself when I've found your ideas ridiculous, but being rude to your audience 40 minutes into a video does a great deal to remove my drive to be polite. It also encourages me not to waste my time watching your videos in the future.

Have fun wasting your time because you project your own values onto words like "cult" in the future. You won't get another chance to waste mine

ryanfeddeler2516: I wish I had your mental athlestism. That is Godwyn the Golden in the statue. There are so many other points throughout the game that hint to his relationship with Miquella being a huge positive point for them both. Its why in Castle sol they were trying to get Godwyn his soul back. I don't like people forcing a point that isn't there.

KidKinobi: Having the world, the demigods, and the community misinterpret information (logically) of a prophecy actually is an inspired take and theory. It makes players part of the world and leaves them in the same confused and baffled perspective as the denizens that based their worship and lives on what they thought would transpire!

Nezxmi: Something that I never see people mention/recognize, the Dragon Cult are made up of the Ancient Dragons whom turned on Placidusax with Bayle - this is shown in their use of branched lightning.

Red Lightning Pot — Craftable item prepared using a ritual pot. A cocktail of materials is sealed inside. Throw at an enemy to inflict lightning damage that links to surrounding enemies. The ancient dragons who betrayed their lord

Molotov_Milkshake: When Rogier says "it happened" I always thought he was referring to the fragment of the rune of death being stolen, rather than the night of black knives. Which of course is what allowed Godwyn to be assassinated.
