Basically, he is still grieving for failing to protect his old flock, so he stopped wearing his helmet, and raider tried to put it on him and he swatted it away. Then at the end of his remembrance, he decides to forgive the recluse for cursing his people with not being able to fly, and he realizes his old flock is in the past and now he needs to protect his new flock (the rest of the night farers).
